Liverpool 2 QPR 1 – Gerrard Atones Penalty Miss By Late Header

Liverpool returned to winning ways after a hard-fought game against the visiting Queen Parks Rangers.

The hosts started on the backfoot, but soon got into the game. Philippe Coutinho scored in the first half with a gorgeous shot, after being cleverly set up by Rickie Lambert. Liverpool went in ahead at half-time and then they had the chance to put the game to bed but Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana missed glaring chances in the second half, before QPR equalized. Steven Gerrard had the chance to win the game for the Reds after they were awarded a penalty. The captain’s effort was saved and it looked like another gloomy end for the side. But he bounced back and latched on to a Philippe Coutinho corner and headed in the winner for the home side. It was an emotional goal for Gerrard who has recently faced a lot of criticism. Not to forget, he only has three more games to go in the Liverpool jersey.

The 34 year-old said on his goal, “I was happy with my header, it wasn’t the best I have scored, that was my header in the Champions League final. It was a good three points, we have to stay strong till the end and keep pressure on the teams above us.”

When asked if this could be his last goal at Anfield, the midfielder responded, “We have one more game to go here at Anfield and I will do my best to get on the score sheet. If that is my last goal at Anfield then I will take it but I won’t give up.”

Rodgers said that he was going to take Gerrard off if he scored from the penalty, but because he didn’t, he kept him on. The Northern Irishman said, “He was very determined after missing the penalty. He’s a unique player and when he needs to respond, he does. You can see he’s still contributing. People behind me told me to take him off but if you keep him on you have every chance.”
