Arsenal FC and Germany star Mesut Ozil has been told by former Gunner Jen Lehmann that he must add consistency to his game if he is to be counted among fantastic players.
Ozil, 26, joined Arsenal FC two summers ago from Real Madrid and following a difficult debut campaign in England, seems to have finally picked up his game to a similar level that he displayed at times with Real Madrid.
.
Ozil gained plaudits for hitting the gym and bulking up after realizing the need to deal with the physical demands of the Premier League, however, Arsenal’s former goalkeeper Jens Lehmann reckons his countryman needs to start showcasing his quality on a regular basis in important matches if he is to be counted among the best.
“Everyone knows he can be a fantastic player. But you need to be a fantastic player in the big games,” Lehmann told The Sun. “You don’t need to be a fantastic player in the small games and mediocre player in the big games.
“He can definitely do that but now he must prove it. You need to know how to think and how to programme yourself.”
Despite the criticism of his consistency, Lehmann reckons Ozil, who remains Arsenal’s record signing at A?42m, can improve aspects of his technical game.
He added: “Of course he can improve. You can’t get better on the day that you retire from football – but you can every day before that.”
Ozil made 21 starts of Arsenal FC in an injury hit season, scoring 4 goals as the Gunners finished in 3rd place in the Premier League. And while he does remain a very talented player, suggestions that he needs to be a lot more consistent to be counted among the very best is not far off the mark.
