Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has attracted a lot of backlash from fans, his foul mouthed rant at an assistant referee in the Supercopa and his constant roasting of Real Madrid being two of the main reasons, but he remains unfazed by the jeers.
Gerard Pique has become Spain’s most despised player due to a number of reasons — his support for the Catalan independence movement, his treatment of an assistant referee in a Supercopa match in August and his constant needling of Real Madrid. It has now gotten to a point where even the fans of his Spanish team boo him.
Recently Pique spoke out about how he felt about this, saying that he didn’t really care much about it.
“It’s a situation that I have to live with. I don’t think about it too much.”, he told Spanish paper El Pais, according to goal.com.
“The people hype it up because I am who I am, and it’s become fashionable. But on most occasions I don’t even realise it. Just a while ago, with the national team, I asked [Marc] Bartra at half-time ‘Today they’re not booing me, right?’ And he started to laugh because they were booing me a lot. But I am so focused in the game that I don’t even realise.”
The Hate makes no sense

Pique also claims that he has no idea why he is the subject of such displeasure by the fans and says that none of it makes sense to him.
“I have no idea what reason they have. They make arguments that aren’t true. ‘Pique doesn’t feel Spanish.’ When have I ever said that? ‘Pique went too far with [the] Kevin Roldan [comment] they say. But that’s just Barca v Madrid and it has nothing to do with the national team.”, he said.
“No argument makes sense to me. I am privileged and very happy to be a professional sports person, but should that make people so angry?”
The Real Madrid fans definitely have some very valid reasons to hate the 28-year-old after his constant jibes on twitter and it definitely takes a special kind of player to draw boos from his own national team fans. It remains to be seen whether Pique can endear himself to them once again or continue being Spanish football’s despised villain.
