FC Barcelona Presidential Candidate Confirms Sergio Ramos Offered As “Trump Card”

Manchester United Looking to 'Unsettle' Sergio Ramos?

In a shocking revelation, one of the candidates in Barcelona’s upcoming presidential elections has claimed that Sergio Ramos was offered to the club as a “trump card”.

Jordi Majo will be running for the president job at the Catalan side next month. He was quoted in Spanish newspaper Sport as saying that the treble winners were offered the opportunity to sign the 29-year-old Spanish defender. Presidential candidates, especially outsiders, in the past have tried to boost their chances of winning by promising a big-name signing should they win. Famously, Joan Laporta promised to bring David Beckham to the club in 2003 if he won. He did, but the former England captain joined Real Madrid instead.

“A while ago we were offered him, a month-and-a-half ago roughly,” said Majo. “I don’t know if anyone else was, but we are not going to play that game; we will not be a reason for him and his brother to increase their pay at Real Madrid.

“If another candidate has been offered him and accepted, that’s their problem, but we totally ruled it out.

“We have not had contact with Rene (Ramosa agent). We believe it’s a case of mutual interest, between them and another candidate (to be Bar a president). It is what it is.a

Former president Joan Laporta and outgoing office holder Josep Bartomeu the current favourites to win July 16’s election.

Majo insisted that there was no direct contact made between him and the player or his agent.

“We did not have contact with Rene, but with an intermediary who made us the proposal,” he said. “For what we know, we feel it is an issue of possible mutual interest between them and a candidate. I do not know anything else.”

The Spaniard, who earns about a 5 million a year is currently unsettled at the club and could be moving away this summer as he reportedly feels that he should be earning closer to the a 10 million earned by non-Spanish ” . galacticos” such as Gareth Bale.

A lot of people believe this might be a way into pressuring Perez into increasing his salary at the club. Ramos has been linked with Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City in the past and all these clubs can afford to land him. If talks, as reported, have indeed broken between the player and Perez, the interested clubs must act swiftly and land the player who is good enough to start for any of the interested sides.
