One more of Basel’s young talented players, Fabian Schar has now signed for 1899 Hoffenheim. Schaar was linked considerably to clubs as far and varied as Arsenal FC, Manchester United and clubs in the Serie A. Juventus were also said to be particularly keen

Alexander Rosen, sporting director at Hoffenheim said the following,

“For him to sign for Hoffenheim is certainly confirmation of the great work we are doing here. We have taken another step forward in our squad planning with the signing of Fabian Schar. Schar’s build-up play is very good and he is someone who has already been able to gain international experience at a young age, yet still has plenty of potential.”

He is 23 and could an international regular with Switzerland. It seems to be an unexpected move, but in the context of the Euros coming up, it is one that makes a fair bit of sense. Also, Hoffenheim have certainly been on the up in recent times with a 8th place finish in the Bundesliga, and with the recent new contract of Kevin Volland seem poised to push on towards the top

Schar is a classy, tall centre back as comfortable in the tackle as he is on the ball. His aerial presence is commanding and has an eye for a pass that cannot be taught. He has also shown a goalscoring with 5 in 12 for Switzerland and 9 in 70 for FC Basel. In an era where ball playing centre backs have become pretty much every manager’s desired type of player, Schar is bound to have his admirers return.
