Manchester United fans’ worst nightmares could become true if recent reports emerging in Spain are to be believed.
Spanish journalist Josep Pedrerol has revealed on Spanish television channel La Sexta that the 24-year-old has made up is mind to join the Real Madrid next season as they are looking for a quality keeper to replace Iker Casillas.
While it would be premature to believe in it, such a report is definitely one that Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal as well as their fans could have done with out ahead of a key encounter against Premier League leaders Chelsea.
De Gea was Manchester United’s player of the season for the last campaign and could retain that this season as well after some inspired performances when his side were struggling earlier in the season. The former Atletico Madrid man has single-handedly kept his side in some games and is one of the reason as to why United are in a top four spot.
After being deemed too weak to play in the Premier League a few seasons ago by many pundits, De Gea has turned into one of the finest keepers in World football if not the best. He is yet to sign a long-term contract with the club which has given rise to rumors that he could consider his future come summer after looking at the offers on his table. If he does so, then there is no doubt that Real Madrid will lodge a bid.
De Gea cost United around a 20m in 2011, and it could take some where around the same amount for him to leave Manchester United considering what is remaining on his contract.
The report said, “David De Gea has said yes to Madrid.
“The Manchester United goalkeeper wants to wear the white of Real Madrid from next season. The club considered many options for the goalkeeping situation but have decided on De Gea.
“And David De Gea is clear… he wants to be the Real Madrid goalkeeper.
“One of the problems had been the future (or not) of Iker Casillas but this is no longer an impediment to the signing of De Gea.
“Only an agreement between the clubs is lacking.”
