Barcelona Sporting Director Carles Rexach Thinks Real Madrid Sold Di Maria Because He Was ‘Too Ugly’

"I'm very grateful to Manchester United for paying what Real were wanting."

Barcelonaa s newly appointed Sporting Director Carles Rexach reveals his thoughts on why Real Madrid sold Di Maria last summer.

Last summer, Real Madrid received a lot of flak and surprised quite a few fans and critics when they sold star-player and one of last seasona s top performers Angel Di Maria to Manchester United. Di Maria joined United for a fee believed to be around a 60 million. Since his move to the Premier League, Di Maria has struggled and has only been a shadow of the player that played a critical in Real Madrida s Champions League success last season.

While it is largely believed that Di Maria was sold as Florentino Perez was reluctant to meet his wage demands and had also signed James Rodriguez, who plays in a similar position as the Argentine, Barcelonaa s new Sporting Director Carles Rexach has revealed what he thinks was the reason behind the wingera s departure. The former Blaugrana believes that Real Madrid sold Di Maria only because he was too ugly for the team. Rexach went on to say that Florentino Perez wants a side that everyone can admire and Del Bosque and Di Maria are not as good looking as someone like Kroos or James Rodriguez and hence, they are no longer a part of Real Madrid.

“Florentino Perez looks at the world market and wants a team of Galacticos for everyone to admire. Do you understand what I mean? Ronaldo is the flagship of the club. Perez is selling an international brand. Vicente del Bosque and Di Maria are too ugly for Real Madrid. They are different from Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez.” he said.

This comes as a very strange and shocking comment from Rexach. People associated with Barcelona and Real Madrid, especially the backroom staff, are no strangers to exchanging such comments and make controversial remarks about their rivals. However, Rexach seems to have taken it too far this time being unfair to Di Maria as well as Real Madrid. Commenting on Di Mariaa s looks was not a very mature thing to do and Rexach might face outrage for the same.

Angel Di Maria, joined Real Madrid in 2010, from Sporting Lisbon for a fee believed to be in the region of a 25 million. He enjoyed regular first team football for four seasons at Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelottia s management. Di Maria won the Champions League and La Liga once and the Copa Del Rey twice before joining Manchester United for a British record A?59.7 million.
