Legendary Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson said that the gunners dona t need to look for a new goalkeeper in the summer if Wojciech Szczesny showed more dedication.
Amidst rumours that Arsenal might be looking to sign Chelseaa s Petr Cech in the summer, Bob Wilson reckons they wona t need the Cezc international if Szczesny applies himself at the club and is dedicated to win back his place.
Wilson said: “From the time Wojciech got into the Arsenal first team there were a lot who asked if he was good enough and I thought this boy has the potential to really be a solid, outstanding goalkeeper, I still believe that because he is – for his position – still relatively young.
“All I would a say to him is ‘look, Arsenal is one of the greatest football clubs. If you go from here I am not sure you are ever going to get a club as good as this. At your age now you need to dedicate yourself to being the best you can be, to the exclusion of a lot of other things in your life’.”
Wilson added: “I was a very late starter, but once I was in the Arsenal side, my family almost came second to my ambition.
“I devoted every moment to regular training and then when the boys went in for their bath, I stayed out [on the field].
“I wanted to make sure I never ever left the game saying I could have been better, so my message to Wojciech would be ‘come on, prove how good you can be’.”
Szczesny lost his place to the Columbian international David Ospina after his double clanger in the game against Southampton on New Yeara s Day. Since then, hea s been relegated to the bench and has had to make do with FA Cup appearances, much like what Lukas Fabianski had to do the season before.
David Ospina has been on good form, making some important saves in most of the games hea s played in, and has kept quite a few clean sheets. Szczesny will have to bide his time and prove himself in the training ground if he wants to usurp Ospina.
Having two quality players in the goalkeeping position is certainly a new experience for Arsenal fans, who have had to contend with having Manuel Almunia between the sticks for quite a long time. But now, Arsenal can boast of genuinely good players as goalkeepers, which can only be good for the defence.
