There is a sense this season that Arsenal FC’s club record signing Mesut zil is finally living up to his A?42 million price-tag, with the German attacking midfielder making telling contributions on a weekly basis for the Gunners.

zil signed for the club on a five-year deal in 2013, and as such, still has nearly two and a half years to go on his contract. However, given his current form, the club have reportedly seen fit to open talks with the former Real Madrid playmaker over a new deal.

According to ESPN sources, the Gunners are keen to tie down the 27-year-old on a new long-term deal in light of his excellent performances for Arsenal FC of late. The playmaker recently equaled the assists record of former Arsenal FC captain Cesc F bregas, providing an assist in his sixth consecutive Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur. zil is leading the league’s assists table with a total of 10 assists in 12 games, and will have Thierry Henry’s all-time record of 20 assists within sight.

zil finally making the difference on a consistent basis

The German has received wide-spread criticism from fans and pundits alike since his move to England, most notably for his failure to make the difference in the big games he has played for Arsenal FC. There is also a perception that zil does not put in enough effort and goes missing when things aren’t going their way for the Gunners.

It might have taken a while, but zil is finally silencing his critics with consistently brilliant performances for ArsA?ne Wenger’s side. Some of the midfielder’s best performances have come in the Gunners’ biggest games, including against Manchester United at the Emirates.

This season, it seems as though the World Cup winner might just be the catalyst for the team’s success, even more so than Chilean Alexis SA?nchez.
