Arsenala s 10-match unbeaten run came to an abrupt end as substitute Bafetimbi Gomis scored a late winner for Swansea to complete the league double over the Gunners.
Gary Monka s side played a disciplined game and frustrated the Arsenal attackers throughout. The hosts failed to get through on goal in the first half and a flurry of saves from former Arsenal goalkeeper, Lukasz Fabianski, denied Cazorla, Ramsey and others as they relentlessly pushed for a goal in the second half.
Arsene Wenger named the same side for the fifth consecutive game as Aaron Ramsey recovered from the knock he took against Hull City. Striker Nelson Oliveira was out injured and Gylfi Sigurdsson started in his place as a central forward for Swansea. However, he kept falling deeper to help out the midfield from stopping the Gunnersa persistent attacks.
With less than five minutes to go in the game, substitute Bafetimbi Gomis headed in as keeper Ospina could only push the ball back from behind the line. The goal-line technology showed that the ball had crossed the line and Swansea was awarded the winner.
After the game, Arsene Wenger claimed that his side was unlucky and there were a lot of positives to take away from the defeat.
Wenger said: “We were a bit unlucky with the goal. There are a lot of positives. This kind of game you play 20 times and win 19 times.
“In patches our domination was top quality. You have to learn from defeat and we take encouragement from a defeat like that.
“Swansea deserve credit for their defensive display but they probably had the fewest passes in our half of any team here this season.”
Swansea manager, Gary Monk expressed his happiness with the win and said that they had planned it out for a week and the players carried out the plan very well.
Monk said: “We worked all week on our plan. The players were magnificent and carried it out to the letter.
“I’ve tried to make the team adaptable. There’s no one way to play – as a team you have to be able to adapt and today was a perfect example of that.
“We didn’t have a fit striker to choose from the start, but I knew if it was tight in the last 20 minutes we could push for a winner.”
The defeat denied Arsenal the chance to get level on points with second placed Manchester City. However, The Gunners still have three games to go compared to City, who only have two. Arsenal are three points behind the second place and two points ahead of fourth-placed Manchester United, who they face at the weekend.
