The former FC Barcelona manager believes Argentina did not get the result their play deserved against Brazil, and is looking to take control of Tuesday’s game against Colombia
Argentina were unable to hold on to their lead on Friday against Brazil, and despite having control for much of the game, had to settle for a 1-1 draw. The result left them without a win in their qualification campaign, and with just 2 points from 3 games, La Albiceleste are placed 9th in the table — ahead only of Venezuela.
Meanwhile, Colombia will be in buoyant mood after fighting from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw against arguably the best side in the continent at the moment in Chile. However, Jos P kerman’s side have now failed to win in consecutive qualification games, and will be looking to reverse that trend when they host Argentina on Tuesday.
Martino will set out to take control against Colombia
Although the Argentine opted for a relatively safe approach against Brazil, Martino believes the game against Colombia will be different.
He is quoted by Eurosport as saying: “We did not get the result we deserved against Brazil considering we dominated the game. We expect a different game against Colombia and we will try to take control.
.
“We know the path we are looking for and our position in the standings does not change our approach.”
Martino also urged his side to be aggressive against Colombia, and efficient when in possession. “Colombia are going to be more aggressive playing at home,” Martino said (via The Star Online). “We need to be very aggressive to get the ball back. And be precise when we have it.”
James Rodr guez wary of Argentina threat despite Messi absence
The Real Madrid superstar scored a superb goal against Chile to rescue a point for his team, and the Los Cafeteros‘ skipper has warned of Argentina’s threat despite the absence of Lionel Messi, among other key attacking players.
“We respect Argentina,” Rodriguez said (via Eurosport). “They are still strong and we need to be careful even if they are without Messi and Aguero. It doesn’t matter if we had one more day to rest, Argentina will go all out for victory.
“We expect an intense game and in order to beat them, we have to play united.”
