Daniel Sturridge has been injured on England duty, and is expected to be out of action for atleast three weeks. Thatai??i??s three weeks that Liverpool FC have to play without their star striker, the second highest goalscorer of last seasonai??i??s Premier League. While they do have the immensely talented Mario Balotelli to take up the role, this isnai??i??t a case of directly swapping one striker for another and throwing the team on the field. Brendan Rodgers will have to first decide whether he wants to play Mario Balotelli as a lone striker, and if so, how would tactics have to be changed to accommodate him.
Letai??i??s take a step back and see how this team is used to playing. Under Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool have been tactically quite flexible. They have played systems with two strikers (3-4-1-2 / 4-4-2 with a diamond in midfield) as well as with a single striker (4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1).
Why a striker pairing isnai??i??t an option
In Sturridgeai??i??s absence, Liverpool FC still have 3 strikers to pick from: Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini. Considering that Brendan Rodgers was all but ready to offload Borini to Sunderland, and it was only because of the Italian strikerai??i??s insistenceAi??to stay that the move stalled, it is unlikely that Borini would get a starting role right now. That leaves Balotelli and Lambert.
Lambert and Balotelli canai??i??t play together. Both have spent most of their time in their previous clubs playing as lone strikers. Balotelli has played as a forward pairing of sorts alongside Stephan El Shaarawy, but the young Italian is probably more of a wide forward than a striker anyway. Lambert is a proper number 9 however, and Balotelli and he would end up occupying the same positions, with neither having Suarez or Sturridgeai??i??s abilities to drift wide and truly contribute from there.
Therefore a single striker system (a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1) is the way forward.
Balotelliai??i??s Style of Play
As was mentioned earlier, one canai??i??t expect Rodgers to simply swap Balotelli for Sturridge in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation and expect similar results. There is a difference between what Liverpoolai??i??s midfielders expect from their lone striker and what Balotelli excels at doing in that position.
By nature he is a very different animal from Sturridge and Luis Suarez, who have lead the line either alone or as part of a forward pairing for close to two years for Liverpool FC. Balotelli is not someone who will beat defenders with his pace in the manner the ai???SASai??i?? pair regularly did. While both these strikers tend to accelerate the game as soon as they get the ball at their feet, Balotelli tends to slow things down more often than not. To be clear, this is not a criticism of the player, it is simply what heai??i??s best at doing. You give him the ball with his back to goal and he will either fashion a chance at goal or bring a midfielder into play.
Balotelli will usually act as the focal point of an attack. With his back to the goal, heai??i??ll protect the ball till he can pass it to a midfielder making a run, and subsequently try to lose his marker and push forward himself. Itai??i??s a style of play he excels at. The best part is that, at those times when he is facing the goal, he needs only a little space in the vicinity of the 18-yard box to let loose a shot on goal.
The Problem
In a nutshell, the problem is that Liverpoolai??i??s midfield expects certain things from their strikers which Balotelli may not have in his arsenal. Unlike Sturridge, he wonai??i??t make darting runs at defenders, beating them with pace and skill. He is therefore not going to have the Englishmanai??i??s efficiency in counter-attacks.
The current Liverpool style of play relies on one forward and atleast one other player having the pace and trickery to leave defenders back-peddling and in effect throwing off their defensive organization. With Sturridge out, Liverpool now have to switch that tactic. And in the absence of that frantic, dynamic style of play, Liverpool may need to turn to a somewhat slower style of play, with a greater focus on retaining possession.
Possible Solution: 4-3-3 with attacking wingers
With Balotelli being a slower, less creative player than Sturridge, this gap has to be compensated in other areas of the pitch. With players like Raheem Sterling, Lazar Markovic and Adam Lallana present in the side, it makes sense that Rodgers should turn to the wings for the needed creativity and pace. A 4-3-3 where the wingers have a license to cut inside and try to get goals is the best possible solution. Ideally this should be a setup where Balotelli would have a number 10 playing behind him.
The benefit of having someone like Balotelli in the side is that he will make the midfielders more effective in attack. He will do a better job of bringing his colleagues into play, and should in effect help boost their goal count. A number 10 like Philippe Coutinho or Adam Lallana can expect Mario to regularly exchange ai???one-twoai??i?? passes with them, giving them greater control over the game. One of Balotelliai??i??s more efficient weapons is his ability to slip a sly layoff to his teammates, often in the shape of a flick or a back-heel. Lallana and Markovic (if played) are the perfect candidates to charge onto these balls and slide them into the bottom corner, as both have a strong goal scoring record.
Balotelli also carries with him a certain reliability associated with a more traditional goal poacher. That is to say that, when the team attacks, teammates will know that Balotelli will take up dangerous positions around goal. Be it the wingers who will cut inside and look to pass into the 18 yard box, or the full-backs who will need to provide width and occasionally cross towards goal, Balotelli is very likely to find his way onto the end of these balls. There are, after all, certain benefits to having an Italian striker on the roster.
Challenges
There are some clear challenges in making a frantic, fast-paced team like this Liverpool side play a slower, more tiki-taka game. It requires a much calmer mind frame, and a higher level of concentration in some regards. Not to mention that the supreme fitness level of players like Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling would no longer be as great an asset as it was in the usual style of play. Steven Gerrard isnai??i??t the most assured of players in a slower paced game, as his natural attacking instincts mean that he is not someone who is used to hanging on the ball for long.
The other major challenge is figuring out who plays on the right flank. Sterling, Markovic and Lallana are have all proven their effectiveness when played on the left flank, so that is not the side of the pitch Liverpool need to worry about. But there is no player that has regularly stood out as right winger. When Sterling has been played there, he has been far less effective than when he plays on the left or as a number 10. He played on the right flank against Manchester City, and had only one successful dribble and zero shots on goal. Against Southampton, he started on the left, he had 5 successful dribbles and 3 shots on goal. Against Tottenham, where he played as a number 10, he had 3 successful dribbles and 3 shots on goal. But chances are he will be playing on the right, being the most versatile attacking player available. One option Rodgers has for the later stages of the game is to bring on Suso to play on the right, as he had featured in that role often while on loan at Almeria last season.
A new yet old test for Rodgers
What is interesting is how this is a style of play that Rodgers had first tried to implement at Liverpool. It was a style he had used at Swansea City, where Danny Graham scoring 12 goals as the lone forward, and wide-men Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer scoring 13 between them as well. He found the personnel at Liverpool were not really suited for the job though, though that may no longer be the case. Luis Suarez wasnai??i??t suited for playing a forward focal point, but Balotelli is. Stewart Downing, a yet-to-develop Sterling and an out-of-position Fabio Borini all failed to provide the needed creativity out wide, but a greatly improved Sterling, Markovic and Lallana are a whole different ballgame.
Rodgers will only be regretting that Joe Allen is also out with injury for the next few weeks, as he would have been the perfect player to help execute this slower, possession based strategy.
