The England International has been asked to prove his fitness after missing the back-end of the season due to a groin injury
Wayne Rooney is all set to leave for Portugal this week, a week before rest of the squad joins him there. The star striker who has scored 38 international goals in 89 matches, has many hopes rest on his shoulders to bring the World Cup home.
The 28 year old striker will fly early to Portugal to prove his fitness. It is believed that Rooney is desperate to be a part of the World Cup squad.
Rooney missed the last three matches of the EPL due to a groin injury, has a history of battling with injuries throughout his career.
He was forced to send back home due to a metatarsal injury when the English team went on its World cup campaign in 2006, and an ankle injury in 2010 World Cup prevented him from giving his best performance. And in both the occasions the England squad faced an early exit in the tournament.
Rooney has himself stated that he feels more determined and focused than ever before. The striker said “Previously I have always been going into the first game looking for fitness and it’s difficult to get your breathing right and the rest of it”
“This time I honestly feel good. I have looked after myself as well as I can be as fit as I can for this tournament. I will be ready. I am looking forward to it.”
England coach Roy Hodgson who revealed the news of Rooney’s early departure to Portugal stated thatAi??ai???Wayne is so determined to be up and running when we get there on the 19th. Heai??i??s got a house out there in Portugal. Heai??i??s not alone. A few of them are going out to Portugal.”
The England coach also believed that Rooney is extra charged to be fit for the tournament, He added Ai??ai???His attitude is that heai??i??s desperate to be up and running on the 19th. Iai??i??m not as desperate for him to be fully fit on the May 19th. Iai??i??m thinking more of the 14th of June, but itai??i??s still quite laudable that thatai??i??s the way he thinks and Iai??i??m not trying to dissuade him.”
The English International will be assisted by two trainers to regain his fitness, confirmed the England coach.
Apart from Rooney, The English squad is facing other injury woes as well, defender Phil Jones and midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are also battling with injuries. And English fans are hoping that all of them get 100% fit before The World Cup kicks off.
The rest of the English squad will leave for Portugal next week.
