It is hard not to feel a little sympathy for David Moyes whose managerial career has come to a grinding halt following his sacking as Manchester United manager at the end of last season.
David Moyes is not big enough for Manchester United. At best he is a manager who can manage a mid table club and once in a while help them punch above their weight. Also, he does not have the personality to manage a dressing room full of over inflated egos and multi million dollar contract holders. These are some of the comments which were very common when discussing the Scot & Manchester United last season.
It is no secret that Moyes failed miserably as Manchester United boss last season. He had taken a club which won the Premier League in 2012-13 by a mile to a level where a come from behind victory over Olympiakos was celebrated as if the Real Madrid of Di Stefano, Puskas, et al. were beaten.
On the other hand, Moyesai??i??s full time successor at Old Trafford, Louis Van Gaal is seen as someone who will return The Red Devils to the top of the Premier League pile and get them challenging in Europe again. He is seen to have everything that Moyes did not – a forceful & authoritative personality, a fine track record of managing superstars and the knack to unearth & blood home grown talent. Van Gaal is also thought to be a person who will ultimately try to emulate Sir Alexai??i??s achievements rather than get cowed by them.
Problem solved then. Manchester United had one bad season but under Van Gaal will return to challenge for domestic honours. This is what the story should have been at this point of the season but sadly it is not. Six games into the Premier League season and The Red Devils are languishing in the tenth spot having collected a meagre eight points. The league table makes more grim reading when considering that three of the opponents were not in the top ten last year and the other three were not even in the Premier League.
During Moyesai??i??s ill fated reign, the club had collected seven points in the first six games but had faced much stronger opposition in the form of Manchester City, Liverpool & Chelsea. United had also beaten Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, Liverpool in the League Cup & Swansea in the Community Shield. In contrast, the Old Trafford based club were soundly thrashed by MK Dons in the only cup match the team have been involved in this season. All of this says that David Moyes is not as bad a trainer as he appeared and neither is Louis Van Gaal a magic worker.
Defensive solidity is another facet which has taken a turn for the worst under the Dutchman. In the Ferguson era, especially the last few years, much of the success enjoyed was down to having a solid defensive foundation. The axis of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra & Edwin Van Der Sar ensured that the barn door stayed firmly shut while the odd goal was nicked upfront by a Ronaldo or a Rooney. While it is not Van Gaalai??i??s fault that no one in Unitedai??i??s side is fit to tie the laces of the aforementioned quartet, it is still impossible to believe that any of Sir Alexai??i??s sides or even Moyesai??i??s team last season would have been beaten 3-5 after being 3-1 up against Leicester City.
Perhaps David Moyes should have realized that the writing was on the wall for him. He was never backed in the transfer window and whether that was due to Ed Woodwardai??i??s naivety or a lack of trust in the Scot is a debate for another day. Maroune Fellaini was Moyesai??i??s marquee signing and while Juan Mata did arrive in January, it is hard to accept as true that the former Everton manager had any hand in that. Fast forward to this summer and Manchester United have suddenly become the English Real Madrid with the signings of Angel Di Maria & Radamel Falcao.
All of this points to the fact that the Manchester United board and the Glazers have a lot more confidence in Van Gaal then they ever had in Moyes. The power base at United is willing to look the other way when it comes to indifferent results under the Dutchman all in the name of a change in philosophy.
Supporters of Van Gaal will say that he always gets the job done and maybe he will. After all he himself admitted that all players he has worked with in the past have taken a few months to buy into his methods. This debate probably will not matter next season when Wayne Rooney lifts the Premier League title for Manchester United.
But the question still remains ai??i?? Would David Moyes have been as successful as Louis Van Gal could be given the same level of mental support & transfer backing. Maybe or maybe not but there is a feeling that the football world deserved to find out.var
