Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has dismissed reports linking him with a move away from White Hart Lane.
Jan Vertonghenai??i??s future at the club has come under a lot of speculations, along with a host of Tottenham players, after a disappointing season for Tottenham. Spurs failed to live up to expectations despite massive investments in the squad in the summer as they failed to break into the top-four and finished sixth in the league.
Reports suggested that Vertonghen, who joined the club back in 2012, is seeking a move away from Tottenham in search of Champions League football. Moreover, his relationship with former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood was strained over the course of the season and it was believed that he wasnai??i??t comfortable with the idea of continuing to play under him. But now following Sherwoodai??i??s dismissal, Vertonghen has stated that he is willing to stay at Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs have been linked with Frank de Boer and the Belgium international, who played under him at Ajax, is pleased with these reports.
“I’ve got a couple more years at Tottenham and I’m happy, and I want to stay there, so it doesn’t matter who the manager will be.
“He (de Boer) is a good manager but there are other good managers as well so, again, the chairman will make a good decision.” ai??i?? The Tottenham Hotspur defender said in an interview.
A host of European clubs are believed to be monitoring Vertonghenai??i??s situation at the London club and are expected to move for him in the transfer window. Former Tottenham manager Andre Villas Boas is reportedly eyeing a reunion with the 27-year-old as he looks to sign him for his current club Ai??Zenit Saint Peterborough, while reports from Italy have linked him with a move to AS Roma. Roma are reportedly preparing themselves for life without Mehdi Benatia, who has impressed immensely last season and is expected to be a subject for a bidding war from a host of European clubs, and Rudi Garcia has reportedly linked up a Jan Vertonghen as his possible replacement.
The upcoming World Cup, where Vertonghen will represent a highly talented Belgium side, will be wonderful stage for the defender to show his worth to the world, but the Tottenham Hotspur center back has insisted that he and his teammates will look to perform for their nation, and not for themselves.
