Borussia MAi??nchengladbach’s loan deal for the younger, hipper Hazard brother from Chelsea has caused a minor stir in the general pre-season murmurings. But for all his prodigious talent, can Thorgan Hazard succeed in the Bundesliga — and, more importantly, is he a good fit for Gladbach?
It’s not easy being Lucien Favre. This August marks the start of only his third full season with Borussia MAi??nchengladbach, and already the man has seen the likes of Marco Reus, Dante, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen leave the club. The dream team of 2011/12 has all but vanished with the departures of Ter Stegen and Juan Arango this summer, the former to Barcelona and the latter to Xolos de Tijuana.
Even so, Favre has done a remarkable job of coaching the perennial new recruits into a cohesive team. And with the arrival of the latest class of 2014, it seems apparent that Gladbach — and Favre — are on track to continue the trend. Having finished fifth in the Bundesliga last season, and thus securing Europa League qualification, the Foals look to be using the momentum of success as a springboard forward.
The club has not been shy about bringing in talent for the 2014/15 campaign. In from Hoffenheim came Fabian Johnson; from VfB Stuttgart, the always-intriguing Ibrahima Traore; from FC Basel, Yann Sommer to take the vacated spot in goal. And from Chelsea FC, Gladbach made a loan deal that — if you believe certain reports — trumps all of the above: Thorgan Hazard.
By all accounts, Thorgan Hazard is a rare and incredibly promising talent. Having begun his career with Lens in Ligue 1, in 2012 Thorgan signed for Chelsea in a move that underscored just how bright his potential was. A hugely successful loan spell in the Belgian Pro League has done nothing to diminish his star. In two seasons with Zulte Waregem, Thorgan made 73 appearances, notching 18 goals and 27 assists, and was awarded the 2014 Belgian Golden Shoe as well as being named Belgian Player of the Year.
Similar to his brother, Thorgan is a born playmaker — and, according to a former youth coach of his — one who can singlehandedly change the flow of the game. He has that unteachable knack for picking out the key pass, as well as the technical ability to squeeze out of tight situations with the ball still glued to his laces. And to add to his control and creativity, Thorgan is calm and collected in front of goal.
In his own words, Thorgan is someone who can play anywhere up front in support of the striker. “I like to play direct football as much as to build an attack on the sides,” the young playmaker has said in interview. “When you like to play in support of the striker, you have to adapt.”
This is exactly the role that Gladbach will need him to take on. “Thorgan is a promising young talent who can play in different positions in attack,” said sporting director Max Eberl when the loan deal with signed. With an attack as fluid as Gladbach’s, versatility and adaptability will be key. So in this sense, Thorgan seems a perfect fit for the Foals.
And Gladbach seems to be a good fit for him, as well. In fact, that seemed to be one of the deciding factors in the youngster’s decision to give the Bundesliga a try. ai???There was interest from Spain and Germany,” said Thorgan, “but I had the best feeling with Gladbach. They play attacking football, with lots of movement, and they will be in the Europa League.ai???
Clearly, the younger Hazard brother is ready and eager to take the next step in his career. At 21, he is fast outgrowing the Belgian Pro League; however, Bundesliga — and Gladbach — is an entirely different beast.
While it is true that Lucien Favre espouses an attack-minded philosophy, Gladbach do not play a single-mindedly forward kind of game. Favre’s Gladbach has always been build on fluidity and teamwork — and what makes teamwork viable, even in the absence of prodigious talent, is legwork.
Gladbach certainly need a player such as Thorgan, someone who can play behind the striker, drop behind opponents’ lines to wait for the ball and pick out that one, perfect, defense-undoing pass. But Gladbach also need a player like Thorgan to put in a defensive shift. If the younger Hazard wants to succeed at Borussia Park, he will have to do more than lurk and wait for the ball to come to him. He will need to actively rack up his kilometers-run-per-match stat. He will have to track back, cover for his teammates, be fluid in their defensive as well as offensive formations.
In other words, Thorgan Hazard will have to demonstrate his purported adaptability. He will have to adapt to becoming not only a player who can wow with individual skill, but one who can keep up with a fast-paced team, and have good enough positional awareness to contribute to the physically-demanding, counter-attacking style that keeps Gladbach effective.
The good news for Thorgan is that he has already shown promise, in an early pre-season friendly against Stoke City where he helped Gladbach take the 1-0 lead with a very mature effort in front of goal. It was a classic Thorgan goal, in more ways than one: it began with a massive defensive blunder from Stoke, which saw them lose possession deep in their own half, and Thorgan was lurking just far back enough to latch onto a timely pass and coolly put the ball into the net.
In the big picture, the one goal is indicative of not much, perhaps. Thorgan still has much to prove, if he wants to live up to the name that’s being made for him as the younger and better Hazard brother. He has a long way to go to prove that he is the player Gladbach needs — and one whom, according to the latest reports, they might be interested in securing for the long term.
“I know that Marco Reus played there,” were Thorgan’s rather minimalist first impressions of Gladbach. But whether he himself can follow Reus’ footsteps and become Gladbach’s next breakout star remains as much an unknown as just how far Thorgan Hazard’ s potential could go.
