On First Look, Manandeep Singh is an honest, humble, down to earth and a gentle person. Doning his exact opposite, Manandeep is a hardworking, aggressive and dedicated player on the pitch, with a never-say-die attitude, fighting for every ball possible.
The Lad from Hisar, Haryana burst onto the National Stage when his 50% goal scoring rate for Air India, took Indian Football by storm. His theatrics with Air India also led him to the much coveted FPAI Trophy in 2012. Subsequently signing for Indian Giants, East Bengal, Manandeep started his Red and Gold career with a bang, scoring four goals in the Federation Cup. However, fairy-tales are unique and rare in football, as a prolific Manandeep succumbed to an injury. Witnessing the Underbelly of Football, Manandeep soon regained his form, signing for Rangdajied in 2013 and scoring some crucial goals in the opening matches.
A Fighter with a Never say Die Attitude, Manandeep was consequently picked up by the Indian Super League franchisee Delhi Dynamos, in the domestic drafts. The Hard Tackle’s Joseph Solomon caught up with Manandeep and asked him about his amazing journey.
Joseph : Firstly, congratulations Manandeep for being part of the Delhi Dynamos franchisee.
Manandeep : Thanks
Joseph : So how does a boy, from a place known for itsAi??athletes, Haryana, get into Football?
Manandeep : Well I was in school when i started playing. As you know,i am not from any academy. I just started playing where the other boys would, in a college ground. Slowly and gradually my interest developed and i said to myself, ‘well this could be something’.
Joseph : What about your Parents? Did the support this thought? Or were they against you play football,Ai??professionally?
Manandeep : There were mixed feelings i guess. Sometimes they were supportive and sometime they were like ‘No, manan, you have to study’. However, they always knew that i was stubborn and i will always do the things i want to .There were times when they said and i remember ‘Don’t go out its too hot’ but i would pick up my bicycle and paddle my way to play football.
Joseph : Given that there is almost no I-League club in the North of India, What is the state of football in Haryana?
Manandeep: Haryana is the state of athletes but slowly football is now developing there. Academies which were not present when i was there, have also started recruitment, so all in all its a good state to be in right now, given the improvements, and i’m trying to help it out.
Joseph : Finally you got into the U-14 Indian Team, then the U-16 and went on to represent India upto the U-23 level. How has the journey been? Are there any key figures in it?
Manandeep : Yes, and it all started in Iran, i think i scored 5 goals in the U-14 level. The Journey has been amazing, i have loved every part of it, i have grown as a person and as a player. Obviously there are key figures and Collin sir is one of them. He is one of the best coach i have ever seen. He taught me what a team is, how to behave on field, how to behave off-field. He made me a man, from a boy. We had to spend almost 8 months with him so yes you can say that he was a father figure to me.
Joseph : Subsequently you started your professional career with Pailan Arrows. How was the experience there ?
Manandeep : The experience was immense, it was like growing from 50% to 80% in a season. Yes we lost, we won and we drew, its football, but what counts were those moments which evolve you into a better player. There was a sense of real professionalism, everybody knew that they were fighting for their spot on the team. It was a purely healthy competition. So yes, the experience was good, it was very good.
Joseph : It was in Air India, where Manandeep Singh emerged as a player, you scored 9 goals in 18 games and gave almost every defender a run for his money. What initiated this a Air India ? Was the coaching staff, say better, or was it just natural ?
Manandeep : I started the season with Air India, fully fit. I remember that at Pailan, my first season, i was carrying an injury. So you know, there is some sort of confidence when you start the season being fit. Its like i was dying to prove something and i carried my experience from Pailan Arrows and cashed in on it in Air India. It was natural, i guess, things started falling in the right places for me.
Joseph : Well Manan you certainly proved yourself. Then East Bengal came calling, how was it to play in Kolkata, the hub of Indian football ?
Manandeep : As we know Kolkata is one of the hubs of football. You go everywhere people know you, they respect you. Obviously they get angry when you loose, but personally i think that the real life of any Indian footballer is in Kolkata. The fans follow you , they know you, they respect you. I think thats what we are trying to achieve, in India too.
Joseph : Tell us something about the World Famous Kolkata Derby, between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan.
Manandeep: What should i say? When you play with 100,000 people in front of you it is a different feeling. It inspires you. If an Indian footballer wants to complete his footballing life, then i personally feel that he must play in this derby. I believe that i was really lucky, and i thank god for that chance, to play for East Bengal in the Derby.
Joseph : You then fell prey to an injury, how difficult was it to cope from it ?
Manandeep : It was difficult, it was like testing my patience everyday,cause as a footballer i always want the ball, but i guess i have a fighting spirit. My family and my friends, also supported me. It was frustrating some days, but there was this spirit that i have to come back, i cannot end this thing. And after that i went to Rangdajied and started scoring again. So i guess, it was my patience which made me cope with it.
Joseph : How would you compare the Manandeep of Air India with, the Manandeep of East Bengal ?
Manandeep : Im the same, its just a difference of time. I guess i took the Air India Manandeep to East Bengal and scored many goals, it improved Manandeep. The player is the same, its just the difference in the time frames.
Joseph : Alright, then Delhi Dynamos came calling, they purchased you for a hefty price tag, is there a pressure to perform, given the money they have spent ?
Manandeep : There is no pressure with the price tag. Its just that you perform and you get paid. I will be playing to the best of my abilities, i just want to work hard and improve.
Joseph : Given the involvement of Alessandro Del Piero in the Delhi Franchisee, how is the experience playing alongside him?
Manandeep : It is really good, you get to learn so much from him everyday. Mads Junker and Del Piero, both are very senior to me and I am just in a phase of learning, i wish to learn something or the other from them everyday. They also act as a source of inspiration, so the experience is brilliant.
Joseph : And how is the Gaffer treating you ? Did he talk to you about your position of operation on the pitch?
Manandeep : Well , the coach is brilliant. Everyone is equal for him. We haven’t discussed tactics or plans for anyone, right now. We train together and we play together.
Joseph : Given the foreign pedigree in teams such as FC Pune City, Mumbai City FC and FC Goa. What plans do you have in your mind when you face them?
Manandeep :Ai??Football is a sport, which is not decided on paper. Every city has a different atmosphere, a different vibe to it, so lets see on the ground who the opponent is. I never think of any opponent before hand, hence there is nothing at mind. All i want to do is go on the field, enjoy, work hard for the team and win.
Joseph : What do you make of the links between Feyenoord and Delhi Dynamos ?
Manandeep: Well the links are brilliant, they will help the team. Feyenoord are one of the best teams in Holland and have produced players such as Robin Van Persie, i think that speaks a lot about them.
Joseph : A Final question before the Rapid Fire segment. What are your thoughts about the Indian Super League ?
Manandeep : I’m excited about ISL. It is a good thing, that big names are coming to India. Moreover, Star Sports would be telecasting every match so it is a boon. Also, it would let the Indian Fans to know more about the Indian Players. I personally have very positive thoughts about the league.
