The Eredivisie is never, ever spared of comebacks, drama and intense, tight competition at almost every part of the league table.
In a way that is more reminiscent of Ajax in recent years, PSV Eindhoven, under new trainer Philip Cocu, have fashioned an unbelievably remarkable comeback to relevance in the top half of the table. For most of the first half, PSV lingered and lounged in positions just above mid-table and at a point, were closer to the relegation zone than the top of the table!
This PSV side is a very young one – with an average age of around 22 or 23. They would do well and dominate throughout the course of 90 minutes, but in decisive moments, the inexperience would eclipse the talent as a goal would be conceded in a solitary moment of concentration lapse. The scoreline of 2-6 vs Vitesse does no justice to the 50 minute dominance by PSV. Injury to club captain Georginio Wijnaldum early in the season did not do a lot of favours forAi??theAi??Philips either. An inexperienced, wet-behind-the-ears manager with an equally inexperienced squad, that could just about do anything but win. Though they put together two victories right before the January break, they were still 6th in the table, and most people already wrote them off, calling them a team for next season.
After the winter break, PSV have looked a completely different team. Though the re-start culminated in a perhaps, undeserving loss vs table-toppers Ajax, the Eindhoven side have since then, strung together a brilliant run of form, with 9 wins (they are on a 8 game winning streak currently) and only 1 loss. Ajax are still the only team to have not lost a match in 2014, but PSV have picked up more points in the interim, leapfrogging from 7th place after the loss at the ArenA to 2nd currently, having played a game more than 3rd placed Twente. Only 2 points separates 2nd and 5th in the table, and admittedly with a mixed bag of results, the order could be reversed with ease. However, it would be wrong to say PSV are in the position they are because of a few lucky results. The considerable improvement in their ability to finish matches, make their dominance worth something and greatly reduce the influence any lack of experience might hold in the game.
A major factor in this, is how Cocu pioneered the arrival on loan of Bryan Ruiz Ai??as well as the return of club legend Guus Hiddink in an advisory, grandpa-like role at the club. Ruiz’s arrival as well as the return of Ji Sung Park from injury added experience the very young PSV team, whose average age away at Feyenoord was an astonishing 21, 4 years. The presence of these two in attack has greatly improved the decision-making skills of perhaps the most skilled player at the club – Memphis Depay. Far too selfish in the first half the season for his own good, Depay still prefers to go all the way by himself but his service to his teammates and influence in initiating attacks has been wonderful since January, to say the least. Should he continue this form, Depay could find himself starting for his country in Brazil this year..
The rise of PSV has also, maybe not so surprisingly but unfortunately, coincided with the relegation of Adam Maher to the bench. The midfield trio of Hiljemark, Schaars and Park have typified excellence in most of the games in 2014 so far, with Schaars helping to shield the defence and Hiljemark as useful in attack as he is in defence, with some intelligent passing and commendable working enthusiasm. Meanwhile, the former AZ man arrived in Eindhoven as one of the hottest young properties across the continent, but having been used in a slightly more withdrawn, more disciplined role by Cocu, Maher has failed to adapt and is having a quite the season to forget. Caught in quite a few controversies off the field, if only he would improve his overall work ethic, he could become a better player under Cocu’s tutelage.
Cocu, himself, has found success after going under Hiddink’s tutelage. The experience of Hiddink helps to smoothen out the rough edges of Cocu’s managerial skills. A great champion of youth, and – for his relative managerial experience – a decent tactician, Cocu feels like the Frank de Boer of PSV. He may still lead PSV, with their outside chances, to the title this year, breaking the Ajax monopoly should the table-toppers continue their unconvincing recent form, and PSV, their mercurial form.
This is definitely not the completed product. There are still appearances here and there of the first-half PSV, failing to capitalise on dominance and facing a setback. But they are starting to learn how to overcome these setbacks and prevent their fragile young minds from giving in. The Academy at PSV has gone through quite a muddle recently and unconvinced by the policy, quite a few young teenagers have chose to change academies, two even joining rivals Ajax. But should Cocu start to Ai??prove that he can win with youth, this should reduce.
It is unlikely PSV should lose any of their more important youngsters this summer and feeling more confident together, they will once again return to their rightful place as title challengers and PSV could just be one of the most exciting teams to watch out for in Europe next term.
