Daniel Sturridge picked up a knock while training for England.
England striker Daniel Sturridge got injured in training earlier today and has since been sent for a scan.Ai??The Football Association has not revealed the nature of the injury and says Sturridge will be assessed by England’s medical staff after his scan.
The Liverpool striker played 89 minutes in England’s 1-0 friendly win over Norway at Wembley on Wednesday.
England have a tough test next as they face Switzerland in their opening Euro 2016 qualifier in Basel on Monday. Switzerland showed in the World Cup that they are a side to look out for and will be wanting to get a good start and exploit England’s weakness.
Speaking at a news conference at St George’s Park, Cahill said of Sturridge, “We have our fingers crossed because he’s a key player for club and country. He has been fantastic of late and he’s a big player.”
If Sturridge misses the match against Switzerland, Hodgson will have captain Wayne Rooney, Liverpool’s Rickie Lambert and new Arsenal signing Danny Welbeck as his attacking options.
Brendan Rodgers would also be hoping that this is not a serious injury, and wouldn’t want a key player out so early on in the season. The Reds looked like they could gain momentum from the victory over Tottenham Hotspur last week and would want their main players to be in contention. Liverpool need a string of good games and the upcoming three fixtures for the Reds also includes their Champions League opener (along with PL games against Aston Villa and West Ham).
Defender Gary Cahill missed training on Friday with an ankle problem but is expected to be fit to take part in Saturday’s session.Ai??Cahill expects England to bounce back from the disappointment of the World Cup.
“Switzerland will be confident, but it is a great opportunity to bounce back from a disappointing summer,” he said.
“Turning around our fortunes is not going to happen overnight – everyone knows and expects that.Ai??This group of young players is the one we have got moving forward for the next couple of years. Everyone needs to be patient.”
