Almost being overlooked due to an archaic rule about height restriction in the Scottish Premier League, Ryan Gauld has sure found a way to stand tall. Although never official, the ai???ruleai??i?? overlooked players who did not measure up to a certain height. Thankfully, taking inspiration from the likes of Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta from FC Barcelona, the Scottish clubs did not stick to the rule. The loss would have been theirs as a gem could have disappeared, say Gauld ai??i?? who is already being dubbed the ai???Mini Messiai???.
The Scot began his career as a 10-year-old when he signed for Dundee United from Brechin City Boys Club. After going through the youth ranks at Dundee, he had to wait until the 2011-12 season to make his professional debut for the club. Although it was only a substitute appearance, it was enough to impress then manager Peter Houston who gave him regular appearances in League matches thereafter.
He signed a new long-term deal with Dundee United which will keep him at Tannadice Park until 2016. Subsequently, he scored a goal in his first full appearance for the club in a 1-1 draw with St. Johnstone. Around this time, there were also rumours of David Moyes personally scouting him for Manchester United. He then played a big role in Dundee United reaching the 2014 Scottish Cup Final, helping beat Rangers 3-1 in the semi-finals.
These performances were good enough to earn him a call-up to the Scotland under-21 side. He had already represented his country at the under-19 level scoring 2 goals in his 10 appearances for them.
After scoring 7 goals in his 42 appearances at the Tannadice based club, Sporting Lisbon announced that they had signed the 18-year-old, in July 2014, for a fee believed to be around 2 million pounds ai??i?? with add-ons that could go as high as 3 million. What is fascinating to know is that the club has included a 48 million pound buy-out clause in his contract, showing how highly they rate him and how difficult it will be to pry him away from the Lisbon-based club. While his transfer may not have invited the headlines in the back pages of English newspapers, it created considerable noise in the Scottish and Portuguese media.
He has a sweet left foot, makes quick incisive runs and has a distribution ability to rival the man he is touted to replace, Leo Messi. An unfair comparison for now, but if the Scottish footballing pundits are to be believed, it could be reality very soon.
Gauld has been described as a dynamic player in central midfield. He can also play at the head of midfield as an attacking player supporting the striker. Not only is his ball control excellent, it is his passing ability which has come to the fore too. He has also shown maturity beyond his years in some matches, while in some he has shown he still has a long way to go. Another point worth noticing is, much like Messi, he also has the ability to find space ai??i??whether for himself or for other players. It is also worth taking into consideration his young age and his presently diminutive physique. His game, one can believe, will only go up from here.
What is also creditable is that at such a young age, he had the know-how to understand where his next move, career-wise, should be. He did not choose the easy path of going with the big guns in the English Premier League or the Spanish La Liga. Instead, he chose Sporting Lisbon where he is more or less assured of playing time and more importantly, away from the constant glare of the British media.
Current Scotland manager Gordon Strachan has also been keeping a close eye on Gauld given Scottish footballai??i??s recent dip in quality and a lack of star names. He believes that players like Gauld can bring glory to Scotland and wants him to be treated like the superstar that he already is. Whether he lives up to his tag of ai???Mini Messiai??? is a question only time can answer.
If there are any negative aspects about his game, it is his inability to get into physical battles. Given his height and a non-intimidating frame, he certainly has a lot of work to do in that aspect. The counter-argument could be the likes of Xavi and Iniesta, who also do not get involved defensively but have done pretty well for themselves over the years. In this day and age of ai???complete midfieldersai??? however, Gauld will be expected to tighten up his defensive skills as he matures.
The scary-but-true part about his story is that there were many players who were touted to be the ai???Next *famous playerai??i??s name*ai??? and faded away slowly. One name that immediately springs to mind is that of Freddy Adu. The American ai??i?? at the age of 14 – was billed as the next big thing in football, but after a bright start, slowly faded into obscurity. Scotland (and Britain in general) will be hoping that Gauldai??i??s career bucks the unfortunate trend.
British football is in need of a new superstar as the Gareth Bale saga cools off and Ryan Gauld looks like he has the ability to achieve that.
