Schalke chairman Clemens Tonnies said that Julian Draxler would stay at the club, unless something extraordinary was in the offing. His agent was also of the same opinion.
The 20 year old has long been linked with a move to Arsenal and it was reported that Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich were also looking at the player to further reinforce their side.
The interst from Arsenal in the winter was pretty serious with some reports even saying-Ai??‘Sources in Germany on Friday night claimed Arsenal have agreed a fee with Schalke that would make Draxler the second most expensive player in Arsenalai??i??s history and that Ai??negotiations with the player have already started’
The German international has a contract at Schalke up to 2018, although he does have a release clause of around A?40million.
However, recent comments from club president Tonneies, and agent Roger Wittman have assured Schalke fans that their prized asset Draxler would not leave the club, or at least not without them putting up a serious fight and getting something huge in return for him.
“Julian (Draxler) will stay at our club, if there is not something extraordinary going to happen (this summer),” Tonnies told Sport-BILD.
“After that next season we will have to see. But I am very much convinced he will play even longer for Schalke than just next season.”
His agent, Wittman, spoke in the same tone and said:
“Why should a player leave the club if the club have just built a top team? I also think it’s good if players stick to what they have signed.
“It would take an awful lot to happen for one of the two [Draxler or Jefferson Farfan] to leave. And even then I’m not sure it would be possible.Ai??The players understand that there is currently a lot of peace at the club and a lot of optimism about their future there.”
Arsenal are expected to make a renewed effort to sign the Germany international in the summer and these comments could well test their resolve to acquire the player.
Draxler has been in scintillating form and has been tipped to do even greater things in the future, given he is only 20 and is yet to peak to his full potential. He has 5 goals and 10 assists to his name this season. He is an attacking midfielder who can do equally well on the flanks and has been mainly deployed on the left wing this season. Draxler’s astounding pace and his knack to find the forwards has been praised a lot.
Arsenal are currently not fairing too well, given the expectations they carry. Since the 5-1 loss to Liverpool, their season has taken a hit and the initial title contenders are now fighting with Everton for the fourth place. For Draxler to be prized away fromAi??Die KAi??nigsblauen,Ai??the Gunners would have to finish in the top 4 and make sure they have the Champions League next season. They would also have to fight off serious competition as the player is likely to attract serious interest from other top clubs in the summer, even with Schalke’s chairman and the player’s agent downplaying a move away.
