Robin Van Persie has expressed his frustration with the team tactics after Manchester United succumbed to a shocking two goal defeat to Olympiakos on Tuesday. Expected to be an easy fixture, United were taught a severe lesson in football as Olympiakos grabbed the tie by its neck after registering a 2-0 win at home.
Speaking with the Dutch TV station NOS, the Dutchman revealed that his game was being adversely affected following the movements of his team-mates. Sir Alex Fergusonai??i??s marquee signing last season, Van Persie cut a lonely figure after having been isolated from the team on Tuesday.
“Our fellow players are sometimes occupying the spaces I want to play in. And when I see that it makes it difficult for me to come to those spaces as well.”
“So that forces me to adjust my runs, based on the position of my fellow players. And unfortunately, they’re often playing in my zones. I think that’s a shame.”
Having returned from his injury concerns, Van Persie was called upon by Moyes before the match to step up and perform in a bid to save Unitedai??i??s flailing campaign. However Robin Van Persie failed to make any impact in the game and squandered the only chance he made in the game.
Talking about the manager, the striker refused to blame David Moyes for Unitedai??i??s despicable performance, choosing instead to reiterate the need for the team to pull themselves together.
“He’s working hard at it, and so are we. Sometimes we play well, but not all the time. We don’t have luck on our side. It’s easy to point the finger at someone, but I’m not like that. We have to do better ourselves.”
Meanwhile Carrick spoke to the press after the loss and reinstated his belief in United to make good in the second leg after losing out on the away leg.
“It’s hugely disappointing but we feel like we’re still in with a chance going back to Old Trafford. Obviously it’s not going to be easy.ai???
“We’ve lost a game we came here hoping to win and haven’t done that. We’re not out of tie by all means, but it’s not ideal.”
When asked as to what went possibly wrong for Manchester United, Michael Carrick failed to point out Unitedai??i??s shortcomings in the 2-0 defeat.
“I’m not sure. We had good possession in the first half. We had control of the game without penetrating their line, but at same time they weren’t causing us any problems.ai???
“The goals came from nothing, but it obviously puts them in a great position. We didn’t start the second half very well. A bit sloppy, really.”
When asked about Robin Van Persieai??i??s shocking miss in front of the goal, Carrick was quick to defend the Dutch striker who himself criticised his team-mates for ai???disturbingai??i?? his performance on the field.
“You can’t blame Robin; he’s created his chance and nearly scored. As players we have to stand up and take it on the chin. That’s the business we’re in. You take the good times and the bad times. We have to keep trying.
“You’re looking for me to blame someone. As players we haven’t been getting good results and as a club that’s everyone involved. That’s how we are judged.”
Quite similar to the proverbial monkey, Manchester United seems to have developed the knack of slipping down two steps after successfully climbing one. It now remains to be seen if the Red Devils have what it takes to successfully stage a comeback in the second leg.
