When Pep Guardiola finally decides to sift through the Champions League wreckage he will realize that his tinkering ultimately led to the elimination of Bayern Munich at the hands of Real Madrid.
There is the often repeated adage that one should not fix what is not broken. In football there is another proverb that possession is nine-tenth of the law but it is the goals that ultimately win games. Pep Guardiola though did not pay attention to these two very simple yet important facts and as a result his side were ruthlessly dispatched by a Real Madrid side who must now be odds on favourites to achieve their dream of winning La Decima.

Possession is important but it is goals that win games
Pep Guardiola has a simple philosophy. He believes that if he has control of the ball he will ultimately be able to prise open the opposition defence. Against Manchester United in the quarter finals at Old Trafford he played with 7 men in the middle of the park once he realized that United would cede possession to Bayern. He deployed Javi Martinez and Philipp Lahm as auxiliary midfielders so that the Red Devils would have little of the ball. Bayern though struggled to break down United and would have conceded a goal on the counter attack if a player with more composure than Danny Welbeck would have been on the ball. Die Bayern ultimately managed to translate all their possession into clear cut chances only when Mario Mandzukic, a forward, was brought on.
Guardiola though did not learn his lesson and continued with a similar philosophy against Real Madrid. Whereas Manchester United in their current guise are a mediocre counter attacking side, the Spanish giants are its perfect embodiment. Time after time they exposed Bayern through the explosive running power of Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Angel Di Maria. That they only managed to score a single goal in the first leg at the Bernabeu was a travesty in some ways as they opened up the Munich based side again and again through fast and incisive breaks.
Bayern though still had a lot of possession in and around the Real Madrid area and should have done a lot more especially in Madrid. But where Jupp Heynckesai??i??s side would have shot on goal last season Pepai??i??s side only looked for a pass. Despite having 62% of the ball the Bavarians only managed 8 shots on target throughout the 180 minutes of football.
Lahm should have played as a full back in the first leg
Pep Guardiola has been playing Philipp Lahm in front of his defence for quite some time now but against Real he should have put the German in his favoured right back role. The reason for this is twofold. Firstly, defensively he is a much better player than Rafinha and it was of no surprise to anyone when all of Realai??i??s best chances in the first leg came from the left side of midfield. In all of these plays it was Rafinha up against Ronaldo, Di Maria and Fabio Coentrao with Lahm not even in the picture. The Bayern captain would surely have done a better job in these situations as compared to his Brazilian counterpart.
Secondly, if Lahm had played as a right back, that would have opened the door for Martinez to play in midfield. Guardiola has always been a little reluctant to use Martinez since taking charge at Bayern but he would have been the perfect foil for Toni Kroos and Bastian Schweinsteiger. He would have allowed the latter two to express themselves on the ball and would have done the dirty work in front of the back four.
Bayern need reinforcements in central defence
Jerome Boateng and Dante are not of the standard of Bayern Munich, not together anyways. Pep Guardiola probably knew this when he took over from Heynckes but he failed to address this situation.
The warning signs were there since the home loss at the hands of Manchester City and they only intensified in the knock out rounds. And surprisingly it is in the air, dealing with set pieces that the duo have been found to be incompetent. At Old Trafford an unmarked Nemanja Vidic was allowed to head home a corner and that was just a sign of the things to come.
Against Real at the Allianz Arena when all Pep needed was a quiet and confident first half hour his central defenders let him down. Sergio Ramos, despite his habit of scoring from set plays, was left unmarked and allowed to score not once but twice. It is the duty of the centre backs to organize the defence during a dead ball situation but both Boateng and Dante were all at sea in Munich.
The surprising thing now is that despite having a plethora of attacking options Bayern have opted to sign Robert Lewandowski from Borussia Dortmund when a player such as Mats Hummels would make so much more sense.
The final verdict
When Bayern Munich were drawn against Real Madrid there was a sense of anticipation as this was a tie not only between two European heavyweights but a match up which brought together two philosophies. Here was a chance to see what would ultimately triumph – Bayernai??i??s possession of the ball or Realai??i??s lightening counter attacks.
But Pep Guardiolaai??i??s errors ultimately led to an easy Real victory. A victory which not only puts into focus the whole future of possession football but also raises the question of Guardiola being the right man for Bayern.
