Mumbai City FC succumbed to their third defeat of the season, as a high flying Chennaiyin FC thumped the visitors 5-1. Peter Reid gave Nicolas Anelka his Super League debut, but after a sixth minute penalty goal by Elano, all went wrong for the Ranbir Kapoor owned franchisee.
“There were too many balls down the middle and they got on them and that is just poor defending. We attack as a team and we defend as a team so Iai??i??m not going to point any fingers at individuals, I think thatai??i??s unfair. But as a team, as Mumbai City, we defended very poorly this evening.” explained Peter ReidAi??
Mumbai also started with skipper Syed Rahim Nabi and Raju Gaikwad, who slotted in Left Back and Center Back respectively.
“Heai??i??s had fitness tests, the medical staff said he was fit. Nabi, whom I admire as a person, said so himself. He said he was fit, so he played and he kept on going. A lot of my players have had a bad evening so we need to improve.” commented Reid, on Nabi’s fitness issues
Although Nabi rewarded his start with a consolatory goal, action eluded Nicolas Anelka, who often dropped deep into midfield.
“I think it was a difficult game for Nicolas because we were under pressure after conceding and they really defended well with Bernard Mendy at the back and Marco Materazzi in the midfield. Nicolas lasted the 90 minutes, itai??i??s something he hasnai??i??t done in a long time but one man doesnai??i??t make the team. I really expected more from Mumbai City as a team.” Reid said.
Although skeptic, Peter Reid also congratulated the Chennaiyin side, he said “It was just balls down the middle, itai??i??s not rocket science.
