Luuk de Jong is the latest Dutchman to arrive in the Premier League. His move to Newcastle United has provided him with an opportunity to resurrect his career.
Itai??i??s the 15th of May, and the year is 2011. Going into the final matchday of the Eredvisie, only 2 points separates three teams at the pinnacle. Permutations in abundance, each has a fair shot at taking home the title. The fixture list has panned out in such a way that the top two ai??i?? Twente and Ajax -Ai?? will take each other on, in what could see either emerge as domestic champions or even both end as runners up if they draw and PSV win their match at the Euroborg. As kickoff nears, the crowd grows at the Amsterdam ArenA much like bacteria in a petri dish, and the atmosphere is as electric as a Cup final, thanks aplenty to VAK410 and F-side.
As the lineups come out, it appears there will also be family bragging rights to play for, as two brothers start, against each other.
Siem, in Ajax colours, and Luuk, donning a Twente jersey. Even though the elder one, Siem, was the one recruited by Ajax when he was 14, Luuk has always been the one touted for stardom, the bigger potential, the brighter talent. It is a direct de Jong v de Jong, with attacking midfielder Siem being deployed as a false 9 and Luuk, the out-and-out striker leading the line for Twente.
With the Amsterdam ArenA shrouded in smoke from flares and fireworks, it would only be 23 minutes before Siem drew first blood, and de Jong Sr would twist the dagger further in, scoring again to secure the win for Ajax as his little brother failed to establish himself in the match. That would prove to be a low in Luukai??i??s stellar breakthrough season at Twente, having scored 21 goals and assisted 16 times in all competitions that season.
However, it seems de Jong Jr has a knack of bouncing back, as he put 15/05/11 behind him and went on to score 32 goals and assist 18 times the following season, even as Twente finished 6th, 16 points behind Ajax.
That summer, many a club came calling for his services, among them his new employers too, who had him on their radars as early as then. Acting on the advice of his father, Luuk chose a club closer to home, at Borussia Monchengladbach. Retrospectively, that has not turned out to be the wisest decision, with de Jong having only scored 8 goals in his time there, all of them coming last season. Having faced an injury setback last season, he came back, starring amongst the goals and assists but was forced to the bench in favour of Mike Hanke. Since then, he has not been able to win his place back, further impeded by the arrival of the highly-rated Max Kruse last summer. Heai??i??s only managed 85 minutes on pitch this season so far ai??i?? all as a substitute.
Newcastle have shown confidence in him, having taken him on loan despite him not finding the back of the net in around 9 months, since the Under-21 European Championships. It may be this confidence that could reinvigorate de Jong to get back on track to achieve those things he was touted to achieve. He has shown in the past that after staring in the face of a drawback or disappointment, he can go on to reveal his potential.
Standing tall at 188cm and of a strong build, Luuk is a big ai???classic centreforwardai??i??, though he is quite an all-round player. Adept at finishing with his head as well as his feet, the Swiss-born Dutchman can create as well as score, having been a withdrawn forward, playing behind Marc Janko in the Co Adriaanse reign at Twente. In addition, he has innate spatial and positional awareness in and around the box, much like a predator that has cornered a prey in its den. However, de Jongai??i??s work ethic on pitch has come under question, having struggled at times to impose himself off the ball, when played alone up front. It could be true that he works at his best when he has a partner up front and with Loic Remy having recently found his scoring touch again with a goal vs West Ham, it could be a win-win if Pardew can find a way to accommodate both into the system at St Jamesai??i?? Park.
de Jong may yet have an outside chance of making the flight bound for Rio this summer, though that will entirely depend on whether Louis van Gaal wants to take two centreforwards ai??i?? in which case, it would be Robin van Persie and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar ai??i?? or three. With Ricky van Wolfswinkel disappointing at Norwich, based on form, the pecking order would place Luc Castaignos and Jurgen Locadia ahead of de Jong in contention for that spot, if at all it is available. It is a possibility that van Gaal could opt for the two aforementioned strikers and take Siem de Jong, and overlook all the others, as he did for the friendlies vs Colombia and Japan.
World Cup or not, Luuk de Jong must now concentrate on getting his career back on the right course. He shall have to put the last 18 months or so behind him, as a component of his learning curve and start afresh. Though the loan is til the end of the season, if all goes right, it would not take much for Newcastle to retain him permanently.Ai??
