David Moyes has endured a nightmare so far in The Old Trafford hot seat and how he handles the case of Robin Van Persie may well define his future at Manchester United.
Any manager worth his salt would tell you that it is best to get rid of a player whose heart is not ai???in itai??i?? anymore. Such an individual would not only give less than a hundred percent on the field but his reduced levels of motivation would also have an effect on others in the squad.
If reports are to be believed this is the exact scenario facing David Moyes. The player in question ai??i?? Robin Van Persie is reportedly unhappy due to multifarious reasons ranging from an altered training regimen which is not to his liking to team mates who are taking up his positions on the pitch to the club having a disastrous season under new management.
So what should Moyes do? He could cut short his losses and move Van Persie on this summer. This would have a massive impact on the wage bill as the Dutchman reportedly pockets a cool 200 grand a week. Van Persie would also be 31 by the time the next season starts and with his injury problems it is hard not to envisage a scenario wherein he might spend a considerable amount of time in the medical facility at Carrington.
Manchester United also looked a lot sharper when Van Persie was taken off just past the hour mark against West Bromwich Albion over the weekend. His replacement, Danny Welbeck, brought some much needed pace to Unitedai??i??s forward line and quite often one is reminded of Louis Saha when watching the young Englishman play. Maybe Welbeck could be the answer to Moyesai??i??s ai???Van Persie conundrumai??i?? much the same way Saha was for Sir Alex Ferguson when Ruud Van Nistelrooy left the club.
For Moyes there is also the added comfort that such a thing regularly happened during his predecessorai??i??s reign. Sir Alex was known to be ruthless with players whom he deemed to be lowering the morale of the team. Both Roy Keane and Van Nistelrooy were quite unceremoniously shown the exit when they tried to exert their will at Old Trafford. But this is where Ferguson was so good. He knew that the day he lost authority over the players would be the day when his empire would begin to crumble.
But does David Moyes have the iron will and force of personality to ask Van Persie to leave Manchester United? Remember this is the same man who single handedly carried United to the league title last season. His goals helped the red half of Manchester forget the heartbreak of a season earlier when their neighbours pipped them to the title on goal difference. He is the same man whose inner little boy was screaming for him to join Manchester United. But sometimes a good manager becomes great when he decides to twist it and maybe this is what Moyes would ultimately need to do to establish his authority.
There is another way to handle this situation as well, and it would require of Moyes a ai???gentle arm around the shoulderai??i?? approach. Moyes knows that Van Persie is still, by a distance, the most deadly finisher at his disposal. The need to keep the Dutchman is also heightened by the fact that Wayne Rooney is more of a number ten now and with Unitedai??i??s problems in midfield this situation might continue. As far as Welbeck is concerned, he is still too raw and lacks the composure to lead the attack of a club the size of United. As for the forgotten man of Manchester United – Javier Hernandez, he is at best a penalty box player and it is hard to see him changing his super sub image.
Moyes would also have realized after the turbulent transfer window of this season that getting a high quality player is no easy task. Any player in the Van Persie class would cost upwards of 35 million pounds and Moyes would be wary of spending this kind of money especially when other areas of his team require urgent attention.
A statistical analysis also reveals that Van Persie has only slightly dropped from his lofty standards of last season. Whereas he scored 30 goals in 40 starts in his debut season at Old Trafford, he has managed a very respectable 14 from 20 this term. This stat becomes even more impressive when considering the fact that United have looked like a broken down car recently as compared to the well oiled machine of last season.
The Red Devils next match is against Liverpool and Moyes knows that United must win if they are to have any hope of salvaging a top 4 finish. How Moyes uses Van Persie for that game will give us an inkling of what lies in store for the Dutchman next season.
But whatever the scenario, if the game is all square on Sunday and deep into added time the ball drops to a red shirt 12 yards from goal it is hard to envisage a situation where Moyes would want the
