Manchester United Make Their Move To Sign Arsenal FC Captain Thomas Vermaelen

Manchester United have made their move to sign Arsenal FC defender Thomas Vermaelen.

The latest reports in media suggest that Manchester United have submitted a bid to sign Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen. The defender is set to follow Bacary Sagna through the exit doors at the Emirates in this transfer window.

The 28-year-old joined the Gunners back in 2009 and quickly established himself in the first team squad. After the departure Cesc Fabregas in 2011 and Robin van Persie in 2012, the former Ajax defender was promoted as the captain of the side, as he displayed leadership skills at the back. But Vermaelenai??i??s performances went downhill after being honoured with his responsibility. He committed some glaring mistakes at the back and also struggled with his fitness eventually.

Following the arrival of Per Mertesacker, the Belgium international has been relegated to the bench, while the German international and Laurent Koscielny became the preferred choice for Arsene Wenger at the back. The duo has been in impressive form since then and Vermaelen is unlikely to break into the first team any time soon.

The Belgium international, who is currently in Brazil with his national side, has already expressed his desire to leave Emirates in search of regular first team action. Reports suggest that the center back will look for a move in the summer and a host of clubs are interested in securing his signature.

Fiorentina and Napoli have been monitoring his situation at Arsenal, and now Manchester United have entered the race to sign him. United endured a disappointing season last time around and are expected to spend heavily in the summer. The Red Devils are in desperate need to strengthen their defence after the departure of experienced duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. United have already been linked with a host of defenders and now reports across England suggest that they are making a move for Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.

The Belgium international might be willing to join Manchester United if he is guaranteed regular first team action and with only year left in his contract, Arsenal could look to cash in on him if provided with the right offer.
