Thanks to the enormous amount of rewards at stake in the Barclays Premier League, life has been getting more and more difficult for young players who are trying to break through to the first team via their club’s academy or even after transferring from one club in the Premier League to another. In this regard, we take a look at 5 young players who are most likely to break the proverbial glass ceiling for young players in England’s top flight and follow in the footsteps of Adnan Januzaj, Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley in the 2014-15 Premier League.
Luke Shaw
The identity of Luke Shaw has ceased to be a secret long before he was the subject of a big money transfer to Manchester United, the first in an exodus of first team players from Southampton. The former Southampton left back had been on the radar of a number of clubs in the Premier League, thanks to his penchant for charging down the left wing without neglecting his defensive duties like many “modern day” full backs. It certainly isn’t easy to get Roy Hodgson to take young players in place of experienced ones to World Cup, and Luke Shaw is one of the few that managed to do that.
Prior to the departure of Patrice Evra to Juventus, the biggest question surrounding Luke Shaw was the amount of game time he would receive in the wake of Evra’s hold over the same position at Old Trafford for the better part of a decade. However, the biggest test now would be whether he can translate his form over the last two seasons at the south coast to a stage where he will be scrutinized by millions around the world on a weekly basis. Luke Shaw’s fitness has already been questioned, and will surely face a big test in impressing the new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.
Jordan Ibe
The name of former Wycombe Wanderers winger Jordan Ibe has been on the minds of Liverpool supporters the world over for more than a year now. Ibe is just 18 years old, sharing a birthday with fellow Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling, but has already made his debut for the Reds, having played Queens Park Rangers on the last day of the league season in May 2013.
All talk about Ibe has mostly centred around comparisons with Sterling, as supporters often complained about the latter’s less than stellar performances at the start of the 2013-14 season. Ibe is pacy and willing to take on fullbacks in wide areas, thus stretching defenders and helping create space for those who play in the middle. Manager Brendan Rodgers is one who is willing to throw young players in if they show evidence of having made enough progress in training, and despite the arrival of the highly-rated Lazar Markovic, Ibe is likely to get more than a few chances to make a positive impression in the upcoming league season.
Calum Chambers
Just like fellow Southampton full back Luke Shaw, Nathaniel Clyne was once on the radar of several top clubs in the Premier League. While Shaw has continued to push on over the better part of two years, Clyne had since been ousted as first choice right back by Calum Chambers. Chambers has now joined Arsenal, and is expected to form the part of an English core that is slowly and steadily being assembled at the Emirates Stadium. Thanks to the departure of Bacary Sagna and the loaning out of Carl Jenkinson, Chambers will surely get ample space and time to prove himself under greater scrutiny.
James Ward-Prowse
Thanks to the inability ofAi??former Southampton captain Adam Lallana to complete 90 minutes on a regular basis, James Ward-Prowse received numerous opportunities to play for his hometown club. One of the four young players (along with Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers and Jack Stephens) to be offered a professional contract following Southampton’s promotion back into the Premier League in 2012, Ward-Prowse has shown enough progress to warrant regular call-ups to England squads at all age group levels.
Following the departure of Adam Lallana to Liverpool earlier this summer, Ward-Prowse is certain to be thrust into the spotlight, and given the recent trend of Southampton’s squad being decimated in recent months, he will certainly be linked with speculation concerning a big money move in the future. That he has talent to make it big time is not doubted at all (esp considering this screamer), the bigger question is whether he will be able to do so in an environment that is currently a lot more gloomy than it was in the last two years.
Eric Dier
English players are usually loath to play abroad, often notorious for running back home at the first opportunity due to being homesick, but Eric Dier is a remarkable exception. Having moved to Portugal at the age of 10, Dier admitted to having struggled to adjust to life back in England during a season long loan at Everton at the age of 17. Having broken through to Sporting Lisbon’s first team and held his own against the likes of James Rodriguez and Nemanja Matic in the Portuguese top flight, Dier is now back in England thanks to a GBP 5m move to Tottenham Hotspur.
The fact that Dier is just 20 years old may mean that opportunities to impress in North London may not be given to him by manager Mauricio Pochettino straightaway. However, the formative years spent at Sporting’s famous academy have seen him develop the ball-playing skills that Pochettino would like his defenders to possess. His relatively lightweight frame may go against him at present (Dier weighs just 135 lbs), but he should be impressive on a bigger stage once he adjusts to the physical demands of the league.
