Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has injured his knee in training and could be a doubt for the World Cup, according to media reports in the country.
Reports from Urguayan braoadcaster TenfieldAi??suggest that the striker’s participation in the upcoming tournament might not be possible after the injury.
The reports claim that Suarez felt discomfort after twisting his knee in training, and tests later revealed meniscus damage.The Liverpool striker will undergo surgery as soon as possible and the Uruguay camp suggested that the 27 year old would be ready for the World Cup. However, recovery from this type of injury normally takes around four to six weeks and if the Uruguayan has to be ready for the tournament, he would have to push these limits, which might end up aggravating the injury (Spain and ex-Liverpool striker Fernando Torres had meniscus surgery ahead of the 2010 World Cup and he played his first match seven weeks after the operation).
Part ofAi??Group D,Ai??Uruguay’s opening match is against Costa Rica on 14th June and they play England in the high-profile clash on 19 June in Sao Paulo. They face Italy on 22 June .
Suarez finished as the highest scorer in the South American section of World Cup qualifiers, scoring 11 goals as his country finished fifth in the continent’s nine-team group.
The 27 year old finished as the Premier League’s leading scorer this season with 31 goals, despite missing the opening five matches through suspension. He received the PFA Player of the Year award along with sharing the European Golden Shoe with Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.
Suarez was instrumental in Liverpool’s league success this season as the Merseyside club finished second in it, two points behind winners Manchester City.
