Liverpool’s Identity, Arsenal’s Lethargy, And The Problem With Jack Wilshere

Liverpool’s routing of Arsenal revealed how Liverpool should best play, why Arsenal cannot afford to keep starting matches slowly, and the issues of playing Jack Wilshere with Mikel Arteta.

Liverpool FC eviscerated Arsenal FC in their 5-1 win at Anfield. Even without their first choice fullbacks and no true holding midfielder, Liverpool ended the match in the first 20 minutes, scoring four goals. Even though the first goal may have been offside, it did not change the flow of the match. Liverpoolai??i??s brilliant display of defensive pressure and ruthlessness on the counter attack was matched by a listless and sloppy Arsenal side, who will find it difficult to extract any positives from this performance. The result has strengthened Liverpoolai??i??s chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, and it has kept Liverpoolai??i??s title hopes alive, albeit at around 5% probability. For Arsenal, this result makes Wednesdayai??i??s match against Manchester United as one Arsenal probably have to win if they want to keep a 85-87 point finish a realistic goal.

How They Shaped Up

Liverpool started in what appeared to be in a 4-3-3 shape, a pressing 4-4-2, or took a page out of Atletico Madrid’s playbook by having their two center forwards drop into midfield, to have up to six defenders in the area. They had a front six of Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, and Phillipe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge, and Luis Suarez. After over-allocating men to his back line in the match at the Emirates, Brendan Rodgers went with two center-backs, which allowed Liverpool to better defend the central midfield zone. What was more important was Liverpoolai??i??s shape without the ball in those opening twenty minutes. Liverpool pushed their fullbacks up the pitch and clogged the center pitch, with as many as six bodies working to deny passing lanes and win the ball back. With this strategy, Liverpool was able to hide their lack of on-ball skills at both fullback positions and the lack of a holding midfielder. When they won the ball, they often found themselves in advantageous attacking positions, where simple direct passing and running was enough to rip Arsenal apart. This performance gave even more evidence to the idea that gegenpressing is the best playmaker.

Arsenal on the other hand appeared to set up in their 4-2-3-1. However, in possession it appeared more like a 2-3-1-4, as the fullbacks pushed up far too high up the pitch. No one would confuse Nacho Monreal or Bacary Sagna with David Alaba when it came to athleticism. They left massive amounts of space between their center-backs and the deepest midfielder or left massive amounts of space between the center-backs + defensive midfielder (2+1) and the rest of the side. Therefore, when possession was lost, Liverpool had little difficultly creating quality shots on goal. In possession, Arsenal were dreadful. Their formation, combined with Liverpoolai??i??s penchant to clog central midfield with numbers and better athletes, left few passing options for either Mikel Arteta or Jack Wilshere. The fact that Arsenalai??i??s fullback decided to stay high and wide, rather than staying deeper and tucking infield, also exacerbated the lack of passing options in the center of the pitch. When Arsenal played the ball wide, they played it to players who are not ball carriers. Neither one of Arsenalai??i??s fullbacks is a prolific dribblers or superior athlete, so they were unlikely to get past the initial pressure they faced. All in all, this performance was one of the worst in Arsenalai??i??s recent history. One could convincingly argue that this performance was worse than the 8-2 drubbing at Old Trafford in 2011.

Brendan Rodgers ai??i?? It Hasnai??i??t Gone to Plan, But Who Cares?

When Brendan Rodgers came to Liverpool, he looked to recreate the short passing game that typified the Liverpool sides of the 1970s and 1980s. When he managed Swansea, his side played a short passing game, predicated on possession. He brought some of the players he managed at Swansea to help transition Liverpool into a possession side. Looking at this current Liverpool side, both Rodgers and the casual observer acknowledge that this team is at its best when they play an extremely direct, counter-attacking brand of football. With players skilled in one-on-one situations like Phillipe Coutinho, Luis Suarez, and Daniel Sturridge, along with skill-set of Raheem Sterling, and the running of Jordan Henderson, one would want to create as many isolated one-on-one matchups and as many transitions as possible. They looked to maximize those opportunities against Arsenal, and in doing so, they crushed their opponent.

It may not have been his intended plan, but Brendan Rodgers has fashion Liverpool into a lethal counter-attacking unit

In fact, Liverpool were at their most impotent when they attempted to play a short passing game in the attacking third. Their positioning and movement was poor as a team, limiting the number of passing options, and ultimately killing their ability to create chances. The way Liverpool set up in this match and in many matches this season, shows that Rodgers has turned more pragmatic about his team. In the future, Rodgers may look to transition his side to the possession game he desire to play. However, for this iteration of Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid serve as better role models than Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Arsenal Start Slow and Get Punished

Arsenal have made a habit recently of starting matches without much intensity or sharpness. While they could get away with this against the likes of Crystal Palace and Coventry, it has caused them to drop points against Southampton and allowed Liverpool to end this match in less than 20 minutes. While the defensive focus did not appear to be there, especially from the fullbacks who were unreasonably high up the pitch, there was a lack of focus in possession. Too many passes went astray. There was no Arsenal player who did not hit too many poor passes. No one covered themselves in glory.

Arsenalai??i??s poor passing was also exacerbated by a lack of off-ball movement. A pass requires both a pass to be made and a player to get into position so the pass can be made. As was stated early, the fullbacks failed to come deeper and tuck infield to help alleviate the numbers issue Arsenal had in central midfield, when in possession. But this was a team-wide phenomenon. Even on television, one could often see the Arsenal player on the ball with no clear passing lanes. That increased the risk of gifting Liverpool possession. It is in this area that Arsenal may miss Aaron Ramsey the most. His combination work rate and positioning, off the ball, is the best of any player in the squad, save Mesut Ozil (who had a particularly awful game on Saturday). With his return to the side uncertain, the rest of the team needs increase their work rate off the ball, so to provide options for the man with the ball.

A hiding like this may break Arsenal out of their recent penchant for starting matches in a torpor. If it does not, then they risk dropping more points, crashing out of the FA Cup, and going through another season where they are not in contention for silverware come April and May.

Jack Wilshere and Mikel Arteta in the Central of Midfield ai??i?? Never Again

When one sets out an XI, often we judge them by the ai???positionai??? in which they place the players. For example, many disapprove of Arsene Wenger playing Jack Wilshere wide on the right because he does not have the skills of a right winger, an inverted right winger, or a right-sided wide midfielder. However, Jack Wilshereai??i??s left-footedness allows him to play as a right wide playmaker. Also, Arsenal attacking midfield trio rotate so much, and Mesut Ozil is more than comfortable as an auxiliary winger, than Wilshere will often find himself in central attacking positions, despite his initial starting point. So while playing Wilshere on the right in a 4-2-3-1 may not jive with oneai??i??s positional preconception of the Englishman, he has the attributes to play there in Arsenalai??i??s system.

If anything, Arsenal fans should disapprove of Jack Wilshere playing in central midfield with Mikel Arteta. If one only pays attention to the position, then one may fail to see the issues in playing Arteta and Wilshere in the ai???2ai??? in a 4-2-3-1. They are both central midfielders, so in that sense it makes sense to play them together. However, when one looks at the attributes of the two midfielders, in the context of Arsenalai??i??s system, it makes little sense to play them together.

Both are fine players on the ball; however, they have defensive deficiencies that are exacerbated by playing together. Arteta, despite his ability to read the game well, make interceptions, and communicate, he is not the greatest at covering ground. His lack of mobility limits his ability to recover if he gets beaten, provide defensive reinforcement if possession is lost behind him, or to quickly get out into a wide area to snuff an attack.

Given these deficiencies, one would want to pair him with an athletic midfielder, one who has a decent understanding of team shape and tactical discipline, and is also willing and able to defend more advanced central midfield positions (the last one is the reason why it is unwise to play Arteta and Mathieu Flamini together, as both like to sit, often giving too much time and space to deeper central midfielders, who are skilled on the ball). You would also want a midfielder who is more economical in possession, someone less likely to lose the ball. This makes Aaron Ramsey the ideal partner for Mikel Arteta, when looking at Wengerai??i??s options. In the most ideal of worlds, Arturo Vidal would be partnering Arteta.

Jack Wilshere brings a lot to the table, when he is on the ball, but takes a lot off of the table, when it comes to the defensive part of the game

Jack Wilshere is not this type of player and this match against Liverpool gave more evidence to the poor fit of an Arteta/Wilshere central pair. First, he often tries to do too much in possession, which can lead to the unlocking of defenses, but also carries a greater risk of losing possession. With the lack of mobility of Mikel Arteta, Wilshere’s risk-taking in possession does not suit playing alongside the Spaniard. Then, there are Wilshere’s issues on defense.

Of the British trio of Ramsey, Chamberlain, and Wilshere, Wilshere is undoubtedly the weakest defensively. Even at his best defensively, he wastes a lot of energy aimlessly running around the pitch, and often throws himself into ill-timed, unintelligent tackles. In the match against Liverpool, players like Sterling and Coutinho had acres of space to pick out a pass or advance up the field, either due to Wilshereai??i??s inability to recover due to a lack of athleticism, his penchant to get caught high up the pitch, or his inability to slow down Liverpoolai??i??s transitions. With the way Liverpool set up to play Arsenal, Wilshere and Arteta in central midfield was like manna from Heaven for the Reds.

If anything, Jack Wilshereai??i??s current profile as a defender is much more appropriate for a position in the attacking trio of a 4-2-3-1. There a defensive mistake is often of a lower-leverage variety compared to one in a deeper central midfield role. Given his style of defending, if he makes a positive defensive play, it is most likely to be him taking the ball off of his opponent. In that case, one would prefer to have Wilshere higher up the pitch on defense, to increase the sideai??i??s ability to create turnovers higher up the pitch. In many ways, one should treat Jack Wilshereai??i??s defensive profile more like that of Santi Cazorla or Juan Mata than an all-around midfielder.

That does not mean that Wilshere must be relegated to the bench. His creativity, ability to transition the side, and his potential as a ball carrier are valuable skills to have on the pitch. While it is unlikely that Arsenal restrain their fullbacks (personally, I would keep the weak side fullback in a deeper position to have more of a 3+1 or 2+2 at the back), pairing him with a more mobile central midfielder like Flamini would better make up for his deficiencies in the defensive part of the game. In that context, Wilshere could prove to be the best option in central midfield.

Therefore, unless Arsene Wenger wishes to have his team ripped apart by counter-attacking sides, it may be best to shelve the Arteta/Wilshere central pair. Until Aaron Ramsey returns, it seems like Flamini/Wilshere and Arteta/Oxlade-Chamberlain should be the pairings of choice.

Conclusion

Liverpoolai??i??s trouncing of Arsenal has helped reinforce some of our notions of these two sides. Liverpool are best as a direct, counter-attacking side. Arsenal penchant to start slowly could cost them a chance at the title or any silverware this season. Jack Wilshere is still far away from being a better all-around midfield option compared to Aaron Ramsey or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. These notions and how both sides reinforce or adapt to them will play a large role in both the races for the top 4 and the title. In fact, on February 16th, the world will see the lessons both sides learned from this game.
