Liverpool have apparently set their minds on completing the signing of Southampton captain Adam Lallana before the World Cup
Lallana has enjoyed a terrific season so far and was recently voted Southampton’s Player of the Year. The midfielder has scored nine goals and grabbed six assists in 37 Premier League games this season. The only midfielders to have scored more goals than the England star are Steven Gerrard, Yaya Toure and Eden Hazard (Raheem Sterling and Aaron Ramsey also have nine league goals each).
Southampton have insisted that they haven’t received an official bid for the player from Liverpool but SkySports have reported that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is ‘determined to complete a deal to sign Lallana before England depart for Brazil on June 8’.Ai??According to reports, a A?20million offer has been lodged with Southampton for Lallana.
However, at the club’s end of the year award party, Lallana said that his future lay at the South Coast club.
“The club means the world to me. I’ve been here since I was 12 and I want to keep progressing with the club,” he said. “I’ve got a great relationship with the fans. We’ve been on a journey, and this is the icing on the cake.”
However, with the prospect of joining a side offering Champions League, the Englishman would certainly be tempted with a switch in allegiance.
The problem which lies in this transfer dealing is that it is almost a given that this would start a bidding war between the host of clubs linked with a move for the England star which include Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, both the clubs that want numerous additions and are apparently being provided with a considerable war chest for next season. If Southampton end up asking for more than 25m for the star, Liverpool would have to think of what their priorities are in the transfer window. The defence department is one which should be of real concern to the Reds, especially after the capitulation at Selhust Park. Brendan Rodgers needs to add a full back to his side and might also want another centre back to add within Liverpool’s ranks, but Tiago Ilori is enjoying a successful loan spell in Spain and might be more in contention for the first team next season.
But Liverpool also need depth in the squad, especially with Champions League next season as they visibly lack that having played around 14 players through the course of the season. After Jordan Henderson’s red card and Daniel Sturridge’s injury recently, it could be observed that Liverpool missed Henderson’s energy in the middle and Sturridge’s attacking prowess.Ai??Daily Mail earlier reported that the midfielder prefers a move to league leaders Liverpool, ahead of Manchester United.
