Brendan Rodgers has has confirmed that Daniel Sturridge’s appearance in Liverpool‘s second last match of the season against Crystal Palace is not certain.
Liverpool will check on the fitness of Daniel Sturridge over the next two days ahead of the side’s trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace on Monday evening.
The England international suffered from a hamstring issue during Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Manchester City earlier in April. The knock prevented him from featuring for the Reds in the Norwich clash. He did however, came on as a substitute last week in Liverpool’s 2-0 home loss against Chelsea. Sturridge did not do anything spectacular after being brought on and failed to inspire his team to get the important win.
Brendan Rodgers was asked for an update on Sturridge’s condition during his pre-match press conference and the Norther Irishman obliged them by saying:
“We’ll see over the next 48 hours,” said the Northern Irishman. “He hadn’t trained since he got injured in the [Manchester City game], so it was a bit much [against Chelsea].
“He had worked really hard to get back and we needed something on the bench that could support us and help us in the game but unfortunately, it wasn’t to be.
“But he’s certainly in a much better place. He’s worked tirelessly this week with the medical team. He re-joins the group and we’ll see how he is come Monday.”
Sturridge has scored 23 goals for the Mersesyside team this season. He has had a slight dip in form recently, having not scored in his last four appearances.
Liverpool will need to find the inspiration to get a win against Tony Pulis’s side with or without Sturridge, although the Reds would surely hope they are with the striker for the important match. The Reds are leading the table at the moment. However, Manchester City have a game in hand and if the Sky Blues win the remaining matches, and Rodgers’s men are able to do the same, the two teams would be tied on points and the outcome would be decided on goal difference- City have a clear advantage on that front.
Therefore, Brendan Rodgers would want Sturridge to be fit for the match and help his team get a victory at Selhust Park, a place which Tony Pulis has made his own this year. Liverpool looked short of ideas in the Chelsea match, where Luis Suarez played as a lone striker. Rodgers’s preferred 4-4-2 (diamond) formation requires two forwards and SAS have been doing a terrific job so far. Raheem Sterling was moving in Sturridge’s position in the Norwich match and did a good job in getting Liverpool a victory, but proved to be ineffective against the impenetrable Chelsea defence.
