Ronald Koeman has said that Liverpool target Dejan Lovren is not for sale.
New Southampton coach Ronald Koeman has lashed out at defender Dejan Lovren for publicly airing his desire to move to Liverpool and then hitting out at the club at its refusal to sell him to the Merseyside team. He has ordered the player to return back to training.
Lovren had stated that he was concerned with Southampton’s ambition next season as they have already lost their coach and three important members of the side. Koeman has blasted the player for publicly insulting the club.
“I spoke to Dejan twice and he was very clear about his situation. I want to keep all the good players – I want to keep Dejan in the team because he is an important player”, said the Saints boss.
“We have to do what the best is for the club. He has a contract, he has to come back this Sunday but I don’t know what will happen after this. It’s football and there is a lot of movement, but first of all we like to keep all that information in the club and not in the press.
“That was not a good thing from his side – I wasn’t happy with his comments in the press. That is not good for the club, for the rest of the players or for himself, and we will speak about whether to fine him or not.”
Southampton recently rejected a A?20 million Liverpool bid for Lovren. Both the Croatian defender and French defensive midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin have been linked with a move away from St. Mary’s this summer. Saints have already lost Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana to Liverpool, while Luke Shaw has moved to Manchester United.
Koeman has stated that after the trio’s departure, he was not planning any further sales and insisted Southampton were not a ‘selling club’.
“We said: ‘Okay, this is it – we are not a selling club.’ The players have contracts. We don’t sell any more players and we will try keep to that,” Koeman said.
“We sold three players – that’s good enough money. Now we will keep the rest and we will continue with what we did last season.Ai??I know Liverpool have a lot of money and they will spend that money and maybe they want to buy a player from Southampton.Ai??But as manager of Southampton I have to do everything to keep those players. The final decision is with the board.”
Koeman has started making additions to the team and has wrapped up an important deal by getting Dusan Tadic from FC Twente as a replacement for Lallana. He is also confident of completing an A?8m deal for the Feyenoord striker Graziano Pelle
