Brendan Rodgers spoke about the future of Sebastian Coates and Liverpool‘s plans for the remainder of the transfer window.
Sebastian Coates was brought to Liverpool by Kenny Dalglish. He was hailed as a promising youngster and the Reds fought off competition from various clubs including Atletico Madrid for his signature. The Uruguayan also received the Best Young Player of the Copa America 2011. Recurring injuries have halted his progress and he has hardly featured for the Merseyside club in the previous two seasons.
The has returned to figure regularly during the Reds’ pre-season fixtures so far and has impressed with his solid, composed perfomance at the back. Rodgers was questioned by the reporters on the future of the defender by reporters in the pre-AC Milan match press conference. The Liverpool boss said:
“He has done very well over pre-season. He’s a player that played in the team when I first came into the club.Ai??He played in some of the league and European games then was out of the team. He was very unfortunate to have a bad injury that put him out for a while.Ai??He’s done really, really well in pre-season. He’s a big boy, but he can play football – he has a lovely touch, lovely technique, can pass the ball and can be aggressive.
“He’s been at the club for a few years, so I think the question for Sebastian will be whether he is going to get enough games that will satisfy his own personal need, because he’s a talent – there’s no question about that.
“He’s a real good guy as well, a humble man, he never cries about not playing. He accepts as a professional that he’s not going to play in every game.
“But he has worked hard at training to get fit after his injury last season and he now looks fit. He has done well in the games and we’ll see what the rest of the summer holds.”
Liverpool and Rodgers have been busy so far in the window- the club has signed 6 players. He was also asked about his plans for the remainder of the transfer window. The Norther Irishman said there weren’t going to be too many names coming to Anfield, but some areas will be strengthened still.
“We won’t have too much more business to be done, but we still have a few areas we want to strengthen,” said the Liverpool boss
“It’s just purely on the back of us having a really thin squad last season where we were very, very short. The players did remarkably well and it was incredible what they achieved, but they need help this year – they need assistance.
“We’ve got the belief this year we can go on and do well in all of the competitions. Especially after the Christmas period on the back end of a World Cup year, we need to make sure we have freshness in every game we play because of the nature of our game.
“There are still one or two areas to look at. There’s no point mentioning numbers or positions – we want a couple of positions strengthened and if we can do that, I’ll be really, really happy.”
