Liverpool FC are eyeing Argentina international defender Marcos Rojo for summer deal
Portuguese newspaper A Bola have reported that Liverpool scouts present for the Sporting Lisbon and Porto match were there to watch 23 year old Marcos Rojo. The defender is already quite an experienced player for his country, Argentina, despite his young age and is almost certainly going to make it to Brazil.
The paper has claimed that the Merseyside club scouts were very impressed with the player and that a summer move could is potentially on the cards.
The versatile Argentina international can play both as a left back and a central defender and has the ability to play further up as a wingback as well. Brendan Rodgers is apparently keen to bring in the 23-year-old defender to Liverpool and wants Rojo to be challenging for the left back spot and adding competitiveness to the squad. While his primary position has been listed as that of a centre back, Rojo has made the left back spot his ownAi??since his arrival from Spartak Moscow in 2012. He has played 18 times in the league for Sporting this season, and has scored twice as well.
The player is known for his speed and good offensive instincts, which would provide Liverpool a lot of good on that weaker left side.
Any move for Rojo will be a little complicated though, as 75 per cent of his contract in the Portuguese capital is owned by a third-party – Investment company Doyen Sports.Ai??Premier League rules mean that Liverpool would need to buy the player outright from both Sporting and Doyen.
Liverpool have had their first choice left back, Jose Enrique injured for almost the entirety of the season. The loan signing of Aly Cisokkho from Valencia hasn’t worked exactly the way the club wanted it to. Jon Flanagan has been the knight in shining armor for the Premier League side as the young defender has stepped up and done a fine job of filling in that spot. However, Brendan Rodgers would be keen he has ample options next season and does not have to rely on chance like that.
THT Verdict- A Possibility
Rojo is certainly a good talent who has proved himself at the young age. He would potentially be happy with a move to Liverpool as the Merseyside club looks almost certain to be in the Champions League next season. Brendan Rodgers knows the importance of a larger squad next season and hence would be wanting to add comprehensively to the comparatively thin Liverpool squad, especially if he has his side competing in four competitions next season. If Liverpool scouts were in fact watching the young, but kind of veteran Argentine international, it would be a very positive news for the club. Rojo has the credentials to fit in any top side and Liverpool would not look at the complicated buying procedure as a drawback and try to rope in the player in the summer.
