Liverpool FC join numerous clubs chasing Benfica’s Spanish star Rodrigo
Liverpool are reportedly planning a A?25m move for Benfica hotshot Rodrigo, according to recent reports
The Brazilian striker, who scored in Benfica’s 3-1 Europa League win against Tottenham at White Hart Lane last week, is wanted by a host of clubs, and Liverpool face the stiffest competition from Zenit St Petersburg, even though clubs like Manchester United and City and AC Milan and AS Monaco have watched the striker in action.
The 23 year old can play anywhere in the front three, but prefers the role of the centre forward.
The player was born in Brazil. After the shift to Spain, he joined the academy of Celta and after being monitored by scouts, moved to Real Madrid’s youth ranks and slowly progressed to theAi??Ai??Real Madrid Castilla in Segunda DivisiA?n B.Ai??Rodrigo was sold to S.L. Benfica for approximately ai??i??6 million in 2010. The La Liga giants had the option to re-buy the player for ai??i??12 million during the next two seasons. But after FA?bio CoentrA?o’s transfer to the Bernabeu club, the two teams cancelled the buyback clause.Ai??Rodrigo, who has scored 10 goals so far this campaign and has previously spent time in the Premier League with Bolton Wanderers, where his loan term was not productive as the Spain star scored once for the side.
For his country, Rodrigo has scored 15 times in 16 games at the U-21 level. He represented his country in the final of the U-21 World Cup and has been tipped by pundits to make the senior full squad very soon.
If the Spaniard was to come to Liverpool, it is obvious that he would not be playing as a sole centre forward as Brendan Rodgers has the best strike partnership in the Premier League at the moment. Rodrigo, would probably play on the left flank, as this position has troubled the Merseyside outfit often and the 23 year old would more than compensate. His move could also see Luis Suarez shift to the left and Rodgrigo playing in the centre, or a switch between the two continuously in the left and centre. He could also give competition to Philippe Coutinho and might thrive in the No.10 role. Brendan Rodgers would benefit from a player who has the adaptability to play in virtually any attacking position. His arrival would also add much needed depth to the squad and a great cover for when one of Daniel Sturridge or Luis Suarez are out with injury or have to be rested.
THT Verdict: Unikely
To make a 25 million move for a player who prefers and thrives in the striker role, seems a little bizarre for a club which has one of the best strike partnerships in Europe. It can’t be denied that Liverpool don’t have ample cover for Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, but Brendan Rodgers could target a more quality player for a comparatively cheaper price. Liverpool have been linked to Ligue 1’s top scorerAi??Alexandre Lacazette and a move of that sort would probably be more effective for the Reds. However, needless to say, if Rodgers does indeed bring in the Spain U-21 international to Merseyside, it would be a huge boost for the Reds for next season, one in which they might be playing four competitions. The fact that he can play on the flanks also gives Rodgers a reason to not rule out the possibility of getting the quality player from Benfica.
