Liverpool‘s summer long pursuit of Alberto Moreno has finally reached a successful conclusion for the Reds as they have agreed a deal for the 22 year old left back with Sevilla.
Chief executive Ian Ayre travelled to Cardiff to resume negotiations with Sevilla officials ahead of Tuesday nightai??i??s UEFA Super Cup final.
The 22-year-old Spain international was withdrawn from Tuesday’s UEFA Super Cup match against Real Madrid, which Sevilla lost 2-0, and is expected on Merseyside for a medical later in the week. Liverpool will be payingAi??A?12million for Moreno up front, with that fee rising depending on various add-ons. The eventual fee could be in the region of aroundAi??A?15million.
After the match, Sevilla boss Unai Emery confirmed the news: “This has been in the offing for a month and a half.
“We are in England and close to teams that are interested in Alberto. We want to wish him all the best. Now we will have to look for another player to come in who is able to give big performances.”
Liverpool’s official website confirmed that the deal had been agreed in principle. The addition of Moreno to the Liverpool side will make him the eighth summer signing for Brendan Rodgers and co. Liverpool would want the player to be added to the side before Sunday’s opening league game with Southampton.
Moreno’s arrival has been looked forward to by the fans ever since the transfer window began. Since then, the Reds are said to be ‘closing in’ on the player two-three times. The Spanish international will compete with Jose Enrique for the starting spot, though in all probability, he will replace Enrique in the starting 11 and the ex-Newcastle man will provide back-up for the youngster. Jon Flanagan, traditionally a right back, did exceedingly well last season as a left back, will also provide cover for that spot.
Martin Kelly, meanwhile, is set to head out of Anfield after Liverpool accepted a A?1.5m bid from Crystal Palace for the defender, whose Liverpool career has been hindered by serious injuries in recent years.Ai??The Academy graduate has made 62 appearances for the Reds since Rafa Benitez handed him his debut against PSV Eindhoven in 2008. The 24 year old has been highly rated since his younger days and has already got his international cap and provided he stays injury free, he can go on to do really well for Tony Pulis’ side. The Englishman can play as a centre back, but his primary position is that of a right back. With the addition of Javier Manquillo, Kelly’s chances in the first team were going to be limited as the Reds now have Manquillo, Jon Flanagan and Glen Johnson fighting for the starting spot.
