Liverpool completed the signing of Lille striker Divock Origi. The 19 year old will be sent back to Lille on loan, immediately for the upcoming season.
Liverpool have completed the signing of Belgium striker Divock Origi from Lille for a sum believed to be in the region of A?10m.
The 19-year-old has penned down a five-year contract with the Reds, but will remain at the French club on loan next season and make his move to the Merseyside club in 2015. He has apparently turned down Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid to join the Reds.
Origi featured in all five of Belgium’s games at the 2014 World Cup during their run to the quarter-finals and scored in the 1-0 win over Russia. He caught everyone’s eye in the World Cup and was one of the most appreciated youngsters in the competition.
Upon completing his transfer in the United States, where the Liverpool team is currently touring on their pre-season, he said: “I am very, very happy and delighted a club as big as Liverpool showed interest in me. I’m very excited.Ai??I know it’s a club with a great history, great fans and a lot of great players. For me, Liverpool is one of the greatest clubs in the world and I’m very excited to be part of this great history.”
Brendan Rodgers, who has been a very busy manager this summer transfer window, was delighted with the acquisition of the youngster.
“For me, he can be one of the most exciting talents in world football. I genuinely believe that”, he said to the club’s official website
“You see a lot of good players, but this kid – for 19 years of age – he burst onto the scene at the World Cup, but we’d tracked him before that, we’d seen him as a young player playing in the youth internationals. He has everything to be world class.Ai??He’s super fast, has a wonderful touch, he’s a good size and is aggressive. What I like, and what I have in other players, is that humility to work hard.
“I’ve seen enough of him over the course of the last couple of seasons to think this is a kid who, coming into the right environment, can genuinely be world class.He will go back to Lille and play there for the season on loan, but by signing him, we’ll have a wonderful player – not only now when he comes in next season, but also in the future.
“He can light up world football, for sure.”
Liverpool have made five signings so far, and Origi became the sixth summer signing for the club. However, Brendan Rodgers still needs to add another name in the attack as the Remy deal was called off due to medical reasons at the last minute. Origi too, won’t be available next season and Fabio Borini’s future with the Merseyside club is still doubtful. Rodgers only has Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert as his strikers in absolute certainty.
