Liverpool are considering a move to sign Uruguayan striker Jaime Baez, according to Tutto Mercato Web.
The 19-year-old currently plays in Uruguay with Juventud. He came up through the ranks of the club’s academy, before breaking into the first team in 2012.
Baez has scored 4 goals from 13 Uruguayan Primera Division appearances this season.
Baez has been a regular with Uruguay Under 20s.Ai??Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus and Ajax are all reportedly keeping tabs on the youngster and are well aware of his potential.
Baez is a quick player whose strength is his pace. He likes to run at the opposition and cause problems for the defenders by linking up with the other attackers and feeding them along with taking shots at goals themselves.
Liverpool are apparently most keen for his services and interestingly, Baez’s style of play has seen him draw comparisons with ex-Red Luis Suarez. Suarez joint Liverpool in January 2011 and left this summer for Barcelona.
Liverpool have been struggling for various reasons, and the departure of Suarez is also a major one. The Reds don’t have enough goals going for them and recurring injuries to Daniel Sturridge have made matters worse. Sturridge last played for Liverpool on 31st August against Spurs, and is expected to return only in January. Mario Balotelli has failed to get going for the Reds and has been out since the November international break with a knock he picked up training with Italy. Rickie Lambert has done well recently but the ex-Saints man was always meant to be Plan B, and Rodgers doesn’t have a Plan A at the moment.
Therefore, getting a striker and a quality finisher in the winter might be a top priority for the Liverpool management.
Baez is incredibly talented and has scored some belters for Juventud and Uruguay youth levels in the past. However, he may not be what the Reds need immediately. Bringing him in is not going to solve any problems, but it will give Liverpool a talented prospect for the future. The Reds already have enough of those. They brought in Lazar Markovic, Emre Can, Divock Origi in the summer, and all three of them fall under the same category.
Not to mention, the 19 year old does not hold a dual passport so getting him to Merseyside would be a real struggle for the club. Ai??Rodgers needs to target proven, experienced men in the winter, if he is looking to get reinforcements.
