Liverpool FC manager Brendan Rodgers has expressed his delight with his teamai??i??s performance in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal FC, especially on an ai???awfulai??i?? Anfield pitch.
Liverpool dominated the match from the first whistle as Arsenal were deprived of possession, in fact the 37.2% possession the Gunners managed in this game is one of their lowest, ever. But despite their dominance, the Reds failed to score the goal till Philippe Coutinho scored the opener in the 45th minute of the game.
Liverpoolai??i??s lead lasted only a minute though as Mathieu Debuchy equalized with a head in the additional minutes of the first half. The Gunners even went on to take the lead against the run of play in the 65th minute with Olivier Giroud finishing off a swift move. Liverpool pushed hard for an equalizer, but their they suffered a setback as substitute Fabio Borini received his marching orders for receiving two yellow cards in quick succession.
Finally the Merseyside club did find their equalizer with Martin Skrtel scoring from a corner in the 6th minute of extra time. That goal provided Liverpool with a well-deserved point and Brendan Rodgers felt that his teamai??i??s performance was better than what they produced in the 5-1 win over the Gunners last season.
“Our performance today was better than our 5-1 last season, there’s no question about that.
“The dominance we had of the game today was fantastic, and the efforts on goal.
“We want to change these draws into wins and I’m confident as the season goes on that can happen.” ai??i?? The Liverpool manager said.
Rodgers insisted that his team is moving in the right direction over the course of their last three games.
“Over the course of the week with Manchester United, Bournemouth and today, we’re starting to see and move back towards where we’ve been over the last couple of years,” said the Reds boss.
“I thought that everything that’s good about this team was there to see. Our intensity and pressure was good, we nullified their rhythm, but when we had the ball, we got into spaces. We always looked a threat.
“To fight back from 2-1 down with 10 men shows the real character in the team. And if we continue this way going forward, with some people returning, we could have a really good second half to the season.” ai??i?? He added.
The Liverpool manager criticized the Anfield pitch though and felt the state of the pitch made his teamai??i??s performance even more special.
“It was an outstanding performance, the quality of our passing and moving on a terrible pitch, the pitch is awful here.
“But I thought the players put that to the side, and the passing, interchange and movement against a good side was fantastic.
“We thoroughly deserved to be at least one up in the first half, but we made bad decisions defensively.” ai??i?? He said after the match.
