Liverpool are planning to make a move for Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen.
Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool have been a busy club this summer and have already made five transfer additions. However, Rodgers has only added one player for his defence- Dejan Lovren from Southampton. Liverpool’s defence was widely criticized last season and the need for stronger back-line was brought fore numerous times. While Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho both put some really good performances, these performances were sporadic and the defence has been cited as a reason why the Reds lost out on the title so narrowly.
It seems that the Liverpool boss is now focusing on the defensive aspect of his team. Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen is the player the Reds are most recently linked with. The Belgian was largely receded to the bench last season as Per Mertesacker and Ai??Laurent KoscielnyAi??put on a strong defensive partnership. Thus pricing away Vermaelen won’t be a difficult task. However, Liverpool face competition from Manchester United, who are said to already have tabled a bid and are frontrunners for his signature, and Barcelona, where Luis Enrique is also revamping the defence as it was a glaring problem last season.
The addition of another defender will surely put Daniel Agger’s future in further jeopardy. The Danish skipperAi??very recently said hat he wanted to prove to Rodgers that he was worth being used more regularly. However, he Ai??insisted that being kept on the bench for most parts of last season was ai???not acceptableai??i?? for him and he is considering his situation at the club.

It remains to be seen whether Vermaelen would head to Anfield. His present situation at Arsenal shouldn’t make the player difficult to court, but the competition for his services will raise his price significantly. The Belgian’s experience will be very beneficial for the Reds, who also need more depth in their squad to compete in four competitions, including the Champions League. Though at the moment, it looks like Manchester United are leading the race for his signature.
