Liverpool are badly struggling at the moment. A lot has been made out of why the team which was scintillating to watch last season has become a nightmare this time around. Winless inAi??fiveAi??games in all competitions, Brendan Rodgers is currently under a lot of pressure. Despite getting reassurances from club owners, Rodgers will undoubtedly be feeling the heat, and he understands that without results, nobody’s place is guaranteed.
The loss of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge is one thing, but Liverpool’s problems don’t finish there. Their current form is also down to under performers within the team. Brendan Rodgers has a fairly youthful side, so it is understandable for him to want some experience on the pitch, but it is better to have young players getting picked rather than to continuously opt the players who can’t get the job done. This would also remove complacency from these players and they would work more in training as their starting spots won’t be guaranteed.
Here are three players he should drop in order to turn things around.
1. Glen Johnson
Dubbed Liverpool’s favorite scapegoat, Johnson hasn’t done anything different on the pitch this season to prove the fans otherwise. The Englant international has been one of the poorest performers for the Reds. The arrival of Javier Manquillo has definitely made his starting spot not as assured as it would be, and it is a testament to young Manquillo as he has definitely done a great job in the right back position. However, recently, Rodgers has opted to play Johnson on the left. This is very surprising since Alberto Moreno, another summer arrival, has been one of Liverpool’s brightest spark. Why this decision can perhaps be understandable is that Moreno has a lot more attacking instinct and he often fails to do his primary job of defending. However, Johnson himself is not doing a great job defensively and gets beaten far too easily. His performance against Crystal Palace was shocking, and Liverpool conceded late against Ludogorets in the Champions League, and Johnson was marking the player the scored.
Brendan Rodgers needs to trust his young Spanish full-backs and proceed with them as Johnson is one of the players in the team who is not helping Liverpool’s cause. The return of Jon Flanagan to action should definitely signify Johnson’s end for the club. His contract situation is not resolved and in all probability, he would be leaving the club in July, possibly to AS Roma.Ai??
2. Steven Gerrard
The much loved Liverpool captain has proved to be the weakest link in the Liverpool team. Gerrard has been operated in the defensive midfielder role and has not done anything to justify his inclusion in the team, week in, week out. The 33 year old doesn’t have the legs or the pure defensive instinct to shield Liverpool’s terrible defence. His attacking duties also suffer as he is neither able to dictate play from the middle, nor link up well with the likes of Sterling and Coutinho. Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen suffer more because they have to do both their jobs and help Gerrard out.
Jamie Carragher has been vocal in the criticism of Gerrard, but he has also maintained that it is the position he has been employed in which is the problem, and not the player himself. Brendan Rodgers used the ex-England captain as a number 10 against Ludogorets and while that was not an emphatic performance, Gerrard still looked far more comfortable in the attack focused solely on that, than he does working in the holding role (not) providing cover to the defence.
3. Dejan Lovren
The Croatian has been the biggest miss of the transfer market. He was brought in to be a leader at the back, as that was one thing terribly missing from Liverpool’s strong previous season. But Lovren has done nothing to justify why the Reds made him their most expensive signing ever. His pre-season game against Borussia Dortmund impressed all, and they could see why he was brought in, but since then the 25 year old has been very poor. Brendan Rodgers, however, has decided to stick with him. The Northern Irishman needs to make peace with the fact that Lovren wasn’t a particularly good buy and drop the player. Mamadou Sakho has returned to training and he should get a run of games when he is match-fit.
Lovren may still turn out to be a good investment and for his age, is still far from his peak years (defender wise). But for now, he is costing Liverpool and needs to be shown the bench.
4. Simon Mignolet
Mignolet has been shocking in front of goal. The ex-Sunderland stopper has been Liverpool’s worst fear. He is sloppy, is not enough of a leader to organize the defence, and has no competition to worry about his position in the team. Ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar had particularly harsh words to say about the current number 1.
