Exactly one year ago, Liverpool were comfortably placed for a return to the Champions League after 5 years in exile, but the fact that Luis Suarez and co dropped points at frequent intervals meant that the supporters were not fully assured of a place in the Top 4. Ironically, it was only after a spectacular defeat at Hull City that the Reds begin an upturn in form that ultimately placed them within 2 points of the Premier League title which they lost to Manchester City.
Nearly 12 months later, it looks like a similar defeat at Crystal Palace will be the trigger that prompts the Reds to finally kickstart their season. An away draw at Ludogorets was not quite like the response that the Reds came up with nearly one year ago, but there are reasons to believe that Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool will finally start to turn the corner.
Injury to Mario Balotelli
In no way is this meant to be a slight against Mario Balotelli. The Italian striker, on his day, is an impact player capable of scoring goals that make the difference between winning and losing. Moreover, his performances coming back from injury could not possibly be worse than the ones had had put out prior to his injury. Super Mario has stated his wish to play up front with another striker, and could get his wish in the New Year once Daniel Sturridge is back from injury (touch wood). However, there is no better opportunity for Rickie Lambert to cement his place in Liverpool’s starting lineup. Fabio Borini offers much in terms of work rate and has in some way justified his refusal to leave Liverpool 4 months ago, but 2 goals in 2 games makes Lambert the ideal man to start up front.
Brendan Rodgers has been stubborn in selecting just the one striker up front this season; however, the link-up play between Lambert and former Southampton captain Adam Lallana may be the one last throw at the 4-2-3-1 dice. Lallana was among the main contributors to Lambert’s goals at Southampton, and was once again the key to Lambert breaking his Liverpool duck at Crystal Palace. It has taken a lot of hard work by Lambert to finally score for Liverpool, while Lallana ground his way through a similarly difficult start to his Liverpool career. Lambert and Lallana may be playing for a different club now – but they are still the same players; so what worked at Southampton should work at Liverpool too. Rodgers will be well-advised to play the two of them together more often.
Desperate times bringing out desperate performances
Liverpool have placed themselves in a difficult situation in their return to the UEFA Champions League. Needing a win at home to Basel on the final matchday of the group stages is similar to Liverpool needing to win by 3 goals at home to Zenit in February 2013. Even though performances in the Premier League from now until the end of the season are what will ultimately determine Liverpool’s long term future, the desperate nature of the situation in Europe could bring out the performance required to take the Reds through to the next round. (Even Joe Allen scored when Liverpool needed goals against Zenit)
Moreover, defeat at Crystal Palace last Sunday placed Liverpool in a situation where 3 points from ever single game is a must. Simon Mignolet’s mistake aside, some of the players on the field at Ludogorets looked like they were fighting for their place in the matchday squad, let alone the starting eleven. More of the same in the Premier League, beginning with the visit of Stoke City, could only mean good things for the Reds and their supporters.
The Steven Gerrard sized problem amidst the piling fixture list
At the time of writing, Liverpool are currently faced with 9 games in various competitions until the end of the calendar year, with 4 of them taking place over the next 11 days alone. More games in less number of days is not necessarily a good thing, but it might give Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers a reason to rotate his squad in a manner that helps the Reds, rather than hurt them the way it has so far.
One must remember that Liverpool brought 12 new players this past summer to add to the depth of the squad, thereby giving Brendan Rodgers more options to choose from. Yet, Steven Gerrard has started every single Premier League Liverpool have played this season, as well as 4 of the 5 Champions League games Liverpool have played so far. Rodgers has been right to shuffle his starting eleven, unlike in previous seasons, but the fact that Gerrard has made more appearances than any other player in the team is clear indication that he is not doing it right.Ai??Liverpool supporters have been quick to criticize their captain this season, but Rodgers is clearly not helping him.
The good thing about a piling fixture list in the Christmas period is that Rodgers will be forced to take Gerrard out of the firing line, and give the likes of Emre Can a chance to impress more often. Were Rodgers to not do so, there is a likelihood of Gerrard breaking down in a manner very similar to his injury during the home win over West Ham last December. It so happened that the games Liverpool played without Gerrard in December contained some of Liverpool’s most cohesive midfield performances of the season. While injury to any player is never a good thing, Gerrard was not in the best of form prior to the injury sustained against West Ham, but came back in the New Year and delivered performances that were key to Liverpool’s 11-match winning streak.
