Liverpool could lose out on another defensive target as Tottenham have a bid accepted for Ben Davies
Liverpool have made serious transfer business already. The Merseyside club has already signed four players and are still not finished. Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Lazar Markovic have been the ins for the club and Luis Suarez is the only out so far. Lucas Leiva and Daniel Agger might be following the Uruguayan out of Liverpool.
While the attack has been considerably (far from completely) sorted, the defence still needs a lot of working and was one of the major concerns last season. One of the main reasons why the club lost out on the title (by two points) was because of the constantly shaky defence. Liverpool definitely need one, if not two, full-backs, and another central defender in the summer.
Alberto Moreno has been a name synonymous with Liverpool this summer. The club has been linked with Sevilla’s talented full-back since the transfer window opened. Sevilla clarified after a few weeks that the deal had become dead after negotiations with the English Premier League club reached a standstill. However, rumors were re-instigated as Iago Aspas was loaned, keeping a future move also firmly in the picture, to Sevilla. It was reported that Alberto Moreno would be prized away in this deal. But that hasn’t happened. The Reds have admitted defeat to land the player as Sevilla are about A?20m, a sumAi??Liverpool are unwilling to pay.
It has since been reported that the Reds have focused their attention elsewhere. Brendan Rodgers wants to bring in Swansea City’s young left back Ben Davies to the club. Liverpool offered A?8m for the player but Swansea rejected the bid as they value Davies at a price more than that.
Spurs have been in talks with Swansea over Davies for the last few weeks, as Mauricio Pochettino is known to be a long-term admirer of the player. Telegraph reported yesterday that the LilywhitesAi??have had their A?10m bid accepted for the player. It has been stated thatAi??Swansea would prefer to sell Davies to Spurs as they think this could help them re-sign Gylfi Sigurdsson, a player Monk is very interested in bringing back to Liberty Stadium. Liverpool’s interest in the player has complicated matters for both the sides and it is believed that Brendan Rodgers has still not given up on the 21 year old and would make an improved bid for the youngster.
The advantage of Liverpool getting Ben Davies would be primarily that for such a young player, he has enough Premier League experience and at the same time, he is at a stage where he can improve with more experience and correct guidance. Davies would be a decent addition for Liverpool, but as someone you would want to be a cover for the first choice left back. Jose Enrique is presently the only left back for the Reds and Davies would come to give depth to the squad and an essential cover for the Spaniard. The problem is that the Reds need an upgrade on Enrique and Moreno was going to be that. Davies looks like he could outclass Enrique in some more time, but wouldn’t get into the starting eleven straightaway.
