Liverpool Defender Sebastian Coates Joins Sunderland On Loan

Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates has joined Sunderland on a one year loan deal

The move was confirmed by both the clubs. Sunderland’s official website read:Ai??Defender Sebastian Coates has joined Sunderland on a season-long loan from Liverpool.

He becomes the Black Cat’s eighth signing of the summer.

Sebastian Coates was brought to Liverpool by Kenny Dalglish. He was hailed as a promising youngster and the Reds fought off competition from various clubs including Atletico Madrid for his signature. The Uruguayan also received the Best Young Player of the Copa America 2011. Recurring injuries have halted his progress and he has hardly featured for the Merseyside club in the previous two seasons (24 appearances, scoring two goals).

He featured regularly during the Redsai??i?? pre-season fixtures and impressed with his solid, composed perfomance at the back. Rodgers was questioned by the reporters during the pre-season. He hailed the Uruguayan’s talent but said that the player could leave for more game-time, so that he is satisfied personally.

This move is a good one for all three parties. Coates would have clearly not made it into the starting 11 with the presence of Dejan Lovren, Mamadou Sakho and Martin Skrtel. He needs game-time to realize his potential, which has been seen in glimpses during his injury-hit spell at Liverpool. Sunderland need to strengthen the squad and ensure they don’t live dangerously this time. It will be interesting to see if the Uruguayan has a future with the Merseyside club next season.
