Liverpool are close to completing a move for Southampton’s 32 year old striker Rickie Lambert
Liverpool have made an offer for the Saints striker and are hopeful of his move to the Merseyside club by the end of the week, according toAi??Liverpool Echo.Ai??The report states, “The Reds have tabled an offer of A?4million plus add-ons for the Kirkby-born boyhood Kopite and are confident of securing his services”.
Lambert began his footballing career in the youth ranks of Liverpool, but was released at the age of 15. He has spent the last five seasons at Southampton, helping the club progress from League 1 to the Championship and finally to the Premier League. The striker hasAi??117 goals in 235 appearances for Southampton and is part of Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad.
Brendan Rodgers is a fan of the player and admitted (before the Southampton match at Anfield) that even at 32 years of age, Lambert is a technically gifted player:
“I think Rickie is a terrific player. People look back now and say it was a mistake to let him go but there may have been something that was a factor.Ai??The emphasis at the younger age should be on technique and for me Rickie Lambert, at whatever age he left here, must have been technically very good because he has still got that. If you are at an academy and have a young player in your system, it is not just about what he can do now it is what he can do later on.”

BBCAi??reports thatAi??Southampton have turned down Liverpool’s initial offer for Lambert, but talks are continuing and if Saints receive a bid they deem acceptable they will not stand in his way.
Liverpool had made a bid for Lambert’s Southampton and England team-mate Adam Lallana earlier this month and wanted to finish the deal as soon as possible. They are the front runners for the Southampton captain’s signature, but Tottenham could well hijack this move as Pochettino was recently appointed as the Spurs manager. If Lallana is prized away by Tottenham or another club, they are likely to switch their attention toAi??Bayern Munich’s Xherdan Shaqiri. The Reds are also in talks with Southampton over Croatian defender Dejan Lovren as well.
A deal ofAi??A?4 million would be terrific for the Reds as they would be able to add a tried and tested Premier League goalscorer for a meager sum. Lambert also looks as the ideal back-up to Suarez and Sturridge as Liverpool need a striker who can be asked to step up when the need be, especially with the Reds playing Champions League next season. The 32 year old has not become jaded or slow, something which could be observed last season. He would be completing his boyhood dream of playing for the club he supports, and his move to Liverpool would also provide depth to the Brendan Rodgers’s squad. Overall, it looks like a good deal for both parties.
