After the end of the exciting World Cup, football fans anxiously wait for the club action to begin. After working incredibly hard in the Championship,Ai??TheHardTackle previews the three teams – Leicester City, Burnley and QPR – who got promoted to the Premier League.

Club: Leicester City
Nickname: The Foxes
Stadium: King Power Stadium
Leicester City are back in the top division after a sizable 10 year gap. The City fans, who have endured more than their share of pain by being relegated all the way to League 1 and losing playoff semi-finalsAi?? to Cardiff City and Watford in that time, finally enjoyed a great season as their team was nearly impossible to contain. The Foxes won 31 out of 46 games to finish with 102 points ai??i?? 9 clear of second placed Burnley. A team that is more attacking in nature, Leicester ended up scoring 83 goals in their route to the Premier League. David Nugent and Jamie Vardy were the club’s main goal-scorers, with Nugent scoring 20. While the team relied on their offensive threat during the course of the season, they were also strong defensively, letting in the second least (43) goals in the campaign.
First Five Games
Leicester have an extremely scary start to the Premier League. Their first game is a home one to Everton. They make a trip to Stamford Bridge and face Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea next. Their next game is a visit from last season’s fourth placed Arsenal. They then travel to Britannia Stadium, to face Stoke City. Their fifth game gets them a visit from Manchester United.
One expects a shaky start from Leicester, after their opening games include three of the potential league champions, another top 4 contender club and an opposition that has been very difficult to win against, at its home. Therefore, it would be important for the owners of the club to stay calm and not make any rash decisions concerning the manager because of the start.
About the Manager
This is manager Nigel Pearson’s second spell with Leicester, having returned to the club in 2011. His first spell was from 2008-10, when he oversaw the club’s promotion to the Championship from the third tier. They could have secured their promotion to the EPL back then itself. In a cruel set of events, they were defeated by Cardiff City by a penalty shoot-out in the play-off semi final. They had fought back from a 2 goal deficit in the second leg and briefly even held the lead 3-2. But the promotion was not to be.Ai?? At the time, Pearson Ai??had a somewhat strained relationship with chairman Milan Mandaric and chief executive Lee Hoos and he claimed that the club didn’t want to keep him. Despite his relatively successful time with the club, he was allowed to speak with Hull City and he left the club.
After Mandaric and Hoos departed the club, Pearson was persuaded to join the club by new Chairman Vichai Raksriaksorn. He did an incredible job with the club last season as he guided the club back to the Premier League. What was more incredible was that he made it look so easy- getting 31 wins and securing 102 points, both club records. He ensured the team worked to their strengths and work as a team. At the end of the campaign, he was rewarded with the LMA Championship Manager of the Year.
Pearson would want his team to manage at least a draw or two in the first five games and start building from there on. He has proved that he is the right man to lead the side and it is important the club stick with him through the season to ensure Premier League safety.
Key Players
David Nugent is going to be a very important player for the side. He enjoyed a stellar season last time around and the Foxes would hope he can have a similar impact in the Premier League. Pearson was able to make him sign a two year contract in the beginning of July, to secure his presence in the squad after Swansea City, Hull City and West Ham showed interest. He has played in the Premier League with Portsmouth and Burnley and his experience will prove to be vital for the Foxes. Kasper Schmeichel, the vice-captain and goalkeeper of the club sat behind a strong defence. The leadership of legendary Peter Schmeichel’s son is going to prove useful for the side as he organizes his defence well, along with captain and defender Wes Morgan. The two ensure that they don’t let in cheap goals and shout out commands from the back. Morgan could continue his good form by now teaming up with Matthew Upson as the former England international was roped in from Brighton for free. Upson, despite being 35, could be essential for Leicester as his experience could prove to be handy for the promoted side and can help Morgan adapt to the Premier League quickly too.Ai?? Anthony Knockaert and Riyad MahrezAi?? play on the flanks and are good at their job of creating width and linking up the game with the forwards. From the central midfield Danny Drinkwater is the key player as he is accurate with his passes and can control the game in the heart of the pitch.

Burnley return to the Premier League after a gap of four years as they gained automatic promotion after finishing the Championship in second place. At the end of the 2013 season, the club finished with 61 points and in the 11th place. The season saw Charlie Austin put on multiple splendid performances for the Clarets, ending the season with 25 league goals in 37 appearances. Manager Sean Dyche took a bold decision of selling Austin for A?4million to QPR. The decision was frowned upon as Burnley didn’t buy a replacement for the money. Instead, Dyche decided to invest his faith in youngster Danny Ings and Sam Vokes. What a decision that was! 21 year old Ings enjoyed the season of his life, and ended up scoring 21 goals in the league (and 26 in all competitions). He was awarded the Championship Player of the Year. Vokes contributed with another 20 goals in the league and the duo ensured that their manager’s trust in them paid off.Ai?? The great thing about the Burnley side under Dyche is that they looked a good team and despite Vokes and Ings heroics, as they performed well as a team and the other players had as much to do with the promotion as the goalscorers. The Clarets conceded the least amount of goals and defenders Jason Shackell, Kieran Trippier and goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who kept 14 clean sheets, were crucial in the team’s promotion.
First Five Fixtures
Ai??It will be a tough start for Dyche, who has been nicknamed ‘Ginger Mourinho’, as he will begin his spell in the Premier League with a visit from the real Mourinho as his team takes on Chelsea in the opening weekend. Burnley then travel to Swansea. Their next game will be at home against Manchester United. The promoted team will then face Crystal Palace away, followed by a visit from Sunderland. The first five games are not the easiest start for Burnley and if they manage to salvage seven points from them, it would prove to be extremely good for the side. Anything above that would be considered fantastic for the team.
About the Manager
Burnley appointed Sean Dyche as their new manager midway in the 12-13 season, following Eddie Howe’s return to Bournemouth. Many felt Dyche had been treated harshly by former club Watford, who had terminated his contract four months earlier despite him leading the club to their highest league finish in four seasons. After a stuttering start under Howe, Dyche restored stability and the club ended the season in the 11th place.
Dyche hoped for better next season, and better he got. The 42 year old believes in technicalities, and is not one who wants to splurge cash in the market. He is highly regarded by his team for his tactical nature and work ethic, and wants to build a strong core of the team. Like Tony Pulis and Crystal Palace last season, Dyche has the ability to prove that with the right temperament, anything is possible. Burnley were the sixth favorites for relegation last season and they gained automatic promotion instead. He Ai??possesses a very likable attitude;Ai?? short, red hair, beard and a hoarse voice- the mix that is certainly going to make him a cult figure next season.
Key Players
Kieran Trippier‘s impressive performances have seen him named the Championshipai??i??s best right back for the last two seasons. The 23 year full back has put on quality displays last season. He is an epitome of a modern full back, being solid defensively and simultaneously creating attacking threat. He provided 14 assists and lead the Championships with most assists. Thankfully for the Charets, the 23 year old ex-Manchester City youngster, signed a three year contract with the clubAi?? amidst interest from Arsenal, Newcastle and Southampton. Ai??He would be important for Burnley’s quest next season.Ai?? Tom Heaton has kept 14 clean sheet this season in Burnley’s promotion push and would be a key member for Dyche this season. Danny Ings would be Burnley’s most important player and Ai??Dyche and the fans would hope that last season’s Championship Player of the Year can replicate that form and contribute with as many goals. Sam Vokes and Michael Kightly(Ai??the winger was acquired from Stoke City after the winger spent a year on loan) would also be key members for the team.

QPR have come back to the Premier League after a gap of just one year and they did so in a dramatic fashion. The team finished fourth in the Championship and defeated Derby County in the play off final in a dramatic fashion. In what was looking like a match heading to penalties, Bobby Zamora scored an injury time winner and resulted in QPR getting back into the Premier League.
QPR performed well in last season and Redknapp actually got familiar with his players in the Championship. He understood how to utilize them in their proper roles. QPR scored 60 goals in total which is not a very impressive figure. Charlie Austin was the top scorer with 17 goals and Ravel Morrison came second with 6. Beside that, there were numerous players pitching in with 2-3 goals. QPR need to make sure that they have more players contributing with the goalscoring this season.
The midfield was QPR’s focal point and it performed like a well-oiled machinery. The likes of Joey Barton, Jermaine Jenas and Ravel Morrison did exceedingly well for the Hoops.
The main problem for QPR last season was the lack of depth in the defence. Richard Dunne, 34, and Clint Hill, 35, both started most of the club’s matches and are both nearing the ends of their career. Nedum Onuoha, pitched in the club’s successful season and Max Ehmer, another centre back, was one of the many players loaned out last year. Therefore this was another area of concern last season. Fortunately for QPR fans, Redknapp has signed Rio Ferdinand on a free transfer from Manchester United.
First Five Games
Ai??QPR kick off their campaign with a visit from Hull City. They then travel to Redknapp’s old side Tottenham Hotspur followed by a visit from Sunderland. Their fourth game is an away one against Manchester United. The Hoops face Stoke City at home after that.
QPR have an easier set of fixtures than the other two promoted teams and would hope they at least manage six-seven points. But most importantly, unlike their last Premier League season, the side would have to show consistency and stability and learn to grind out draws. They would need to carry the results of the first few games into the remaining season to ensure they are not in a vulnerable place like last time.
About the Manager
Harry Redknapp makes a return to Premier League action and the 67 year old is the oldest manager in English Professional football. He was hired as the manager of the London side in October 2012, after Mark Hughes was unable to get the right results with the club. The ex- Spurs boss was given the reins when QPR had managed 4 points in 12 games. The dismal start to the league meant that the 67 year old couldn’t save them from relegation. However, he did manage a win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the process, which turned out to be the only highlight of QPR’s season. Redknapp proved why he is regarded so highly in English football and got the club back to the top division after just a year in the Championship. He now has to make all the right moves before the season starts, and during it, to ensure his last years as a manager are in the top flight, and maybe with a cup or two.
Key Players
Charlie Austin scored 17 goals for the club and continued his prolific record in the Championship. He needs to now show his mettle in the Premier League and if he can pitch in with 15-18 goals, QPR could find themselves in a good position.Ai??Ai?? Rio Ferdinand is going to be a key player for Redknapp as he adds a wealth of experience to the QPR squad. But even though his addition is great for the defence, the fact that he is 35 and is reaching the end of his career means that this his addition is only a temporary solution. Reports suggest the club is close to getting Steven Caulker from Cardiff. A central defence partnership of Ferdinand and Caulker could prove to be an extremely good one for QPR as Caulker could learn from one of the best defenders and prove to be as influential in the future for the Hoops. Joey Barton, the very loud-mouthed midfielder, did all the right things for QPR last season and was a workhouse in the midfield. He played in both a deeper role as well as in a more advanced position. Also well versed with the demands of the Premier League, he could prove to be an important figure in the QPR midfield along with Jermaine Jenas (Jenas is suffering from injury and would miss the start of the season. He is however, out of contract and it remains to be seen if he will be offered one), Ai??Junior Hoilett and Bobby Zamora. Unfortunately QPR will not be able to keep Loic Remy in the squad as the player is close to making a move to Liverpool. He would have been a terrific player for the club and could have helped them finish near the top-half of the table. It looks like QPR are gettingAi?? Kolbeinn Sigthorsson from Ajax as a replacement for the departing Frenchman.Ai??Adel Taarabt as the winger can be an effective player when managed well.
