Arsenal are reportedly pursuing German international Sami Khedira. But given the midfield options already at Arsene Wenger’s disposal, do Arsenal really need Khedira?
Last season in the Ai??Premier League, Arsenal were top of the table for over 45% of the season, just not when it mattered most. Still, they made up for it by winning their first trophy in nine years after they beat Hull 2-1 in the FA Cup final last May. Throughout the season, Arsenal played their traditional passing style, and it worked wonders as they carved out some of the finest goals of season, including Jack Wilshereai??i??s stunning goal against Norwich.
The inclusion of Mesut Ai??zil was vital to their title charge, as he was able to play in his natural role behind Olivier Giroud, and the German ended up with a respectable 5 goals and 9 assists by the end of the season. The Gunners are loaded in midfield as they have about 10 viable options to fill in the five starting spots in their 4-5-1 formation. Most of all, they have some magnificent central midfielders such as Mikel Arteta, Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ai??zil, Mathieu Flamini, and Tomas Rosicky. So do they really need Sami Khedira?
Every successful top team in Europe these days has at least one or two solid, ball-winning central midfielders. Manchester City have Yaya Toure and Fernando; Bayern Munich have Bastian Schweinsteiger and Phillip Lahm; Barcelona have Sergio Busquets; Real Madrid have Xabi Alonso. For Arsenal, the two who fill in that holding midfield role are captain Mikel Arteta, and Jack Wilshere. The three who play in front of them are, arguably, the three best players on the squad in Ai??zil, Cazorla, and Ramsey. With those three irreplaceable, and captain Arteta as one of the holding midfielders, the only player who could possibly make way in the first 11 ai??i?? should Khedira come in to the squad ai??i?? would be Jack Wilshere.
Although it seems as if Wilshere broke onto the scene a while ago, he is still only 22 years old and still has a lot of room to grow. If Khedira makes the move to Arsenal, it would almost certainly signal the end for Jack Wilshere. Not only would this stunt Wilshereai??i??s growth, it would also harm many of the youngsters whom ArsA?ne Wenger have brought in, such as Serge Gnabry, Gedion Zelalem, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. More competition for those five spots will mean some talented, first-team caliber players will not be able to play even in cup games.
If Arsenal do end up signing Khedira, they will have to sell one of their central midfielders, presumably Jack Wilshere, as he will most likely not be happy sitting on the bench. If Wilshere is able to stay fit and healthy for a few seasons, he could develop into one of the best central midfielders in the world. Khedira is 27 years old right now, five years older than Wilshere. In five years’ time, while Khedira may be losing some of his bite, Wilshere would be in his prime; so while it may be a slight upgrade right now, in the long-term the transfer would not be a very good investment. Although right now Khedira may be a bit of an upgrade, Wenger has to plan for future and understand that Wilshere can grow into a very solid player.
Dropping Arteta would be another option. Wenger has shown with Thomas Vermaelen that he is perfectly comfortable in dropping his captains if necessary. When Vermaelen was injured last season, Per Mertesacker filled in admirably and won the starting spot off the former captain. But without Arteta, Arsenal do not have that extra bit of class in the center of the park. Not only does Arteta win the ball back, he is also a great distributor of the ball. Losing him would ruin Arsenalai??i??s rhythm.
Lastly, just thinking about the group of players Arsenal have, the one position they donai??i??t need to improve on is the central midfield area. They could possibly pick up another goalkeeper, a central defender, and/or a striker. The reported 12 million pounds, which Real Madrid seem to be holding out for, could be spent on much more useful players, given Arsenalai??i??s current position. Liverpool have just spent a reported 16 million pounds on signing Mario Balotelli, a fee which Arsenal could have afforded. A purchase akin to that would be a much more useful usage of the money than a signing of Sami Khedira.
All in all, it would be no big mistake if Arsenal do end up signing Sami Khedira, but his value to the team may be lost amidst the vast talent Arsenal have right now in that position. Khediraai??i??s signing may force the departure of one of Arsenalai??i??s younger homegrown starters, which may come back to haunt them in the future.
