It has been a roller-coaster season to say they least and one which often left fans at the very edge of their seats. From teams formed with a few million dollars rising to the occasion and going all the way to teams exploding on the field and off it, fans were witness to the drama that only football can bring. THT brings you five selected highlights from the season gone by.
Juventus clinching their third straight Serie A title
At the beginning of the season, no one doubted that Juventus will retain their title, although Roma’s performance did put a question
As they crushed opponent after opponent on their relentless march toward their third Scudetto, questions were raised about the future of Conte, although those question were mainly raised due to their lack of success in Europe. Like a true leader, Conte fought off every one of them and silenced his critics by winning the Serie A title. A lot has changed in this Juventus side over the last couple of years, but one thing has remained the same – Conte. Juve fans will surely be looking towards the new season, fully aware of the fact that they could well win it all over again.
Barcelona failed to win even a single trophy
Top clubs have often finished without trophies even after fighting all season. However, in the case of Barcelona last season, nothing seemed to be going their way. It all started with the Messi tax scandal which took the Spanish media literally by storm. From seeing the little master mesmerize opponents on the field, fans were witness to a Messi who suited up in front of courthouses. In the end, he did pay his due tax to the Spanish authorities, but by that time, the scandal has taken its toll on the team. Next came the Neymar saga. After a bitter tassle with rivals Real Madrid, Barcelona acquired the mercurial striker for a princely sum. Exactly how much they paid – no one came to know; until the Spanish tax authorities took a closer look at the deal.
A lot of words were thrown around as accusations soon arose against the player and his father. While Neymar vehemently denied any wrongdoings, the resignation of Sandro Rosell made matters a wee bit complicated. At the end, Barcelona had to pay around $18 to the tax authorities to even things out. What was deemed as a dream transfer did not materialize on the field as Neymar and Messi did not exactly set the field on fire. While they combined well on occasion, they failed to make it count when it mattered the most. On top of all these, the appointment of Tata Martino was greeted by the fans with a mixed reaction. Sadly though, he did not make it to the next season. This was the first time in years that Barcelona ended a season without any trophy to their name and if things continue this way, there is bound to be some soul-searching and more finger pointing.
Milan falling apart like a house of cards
This one took some time coming but once it did, there was no stopping the downfall. The once-mighty MilanAi??that lifted the Scudetto few seasons back failed to make it to the Champions League spot for the next season. Not only that, they changed coaches like the way Manchester City would operate. The Milan of 2005 and 2007 is gone – and no matter how fondly fans remember those times, it will take quite some time and resource for Milan to reach those lofty places and claim themselves to be the best in Italy and Europe.
That Milan were on the downward spiral was apparent few seasons back when amongst a host of veteran farewells, they decided to part with their crown jewels – Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. If Milan were bereft of strong presence in the dressing room by the mass exodus of experienced campaigners at that time, this double blow was undoubtedly their lowest point. Allegri knew he had a losing battle on his hands and even though he tried his best to steady the ship, it had been damaged beyond repairs. Mayhem and chaos reigned in the 2013-14 season, as after a disastrous start, Allegri was fired. With the Milan board in total disarray, Berlusconi thought it would be wise to hire Seedorf, a player with zero managerial capabilities. And to top of it all, instead of backing his selection, he continued to criticize and belittle him, once comparing the coach to someone in an elder home.
The David Moyes saga
Manchester United bid a warm and emotional farewell to their beloved Scot as he lifted the Premier League trophy aloft one last time
However, none of the fans have ever felt or wondered about the day when Ferguson will no longer take his place in the United dugout. Ferguson personally hand-picked fellow Scot David Moyes for the most important move of his career till date and at the beginning, it seemed like a wise decision. However, not only did that move backfire, it resulted in United being ousted from Europe for the first time in decades. Once considered an impenetrable fortress, United lost to Everton, Swansea, Newcastle, West Brom and Stoke at home. Not only that, it was the first time Everton and Liverpool did the double over them. At the end, it was only apt that he was sacked and the reigns of the team was handed over to the most decorated player in the Premier League history – Giggs.
Ancelotti at the helm
Real Madrid always had the talent to shine but where and what they lacked was an eternal mystery to them. Between their last Champions League triumph in 2001-02 season and this year, Madrid has spent over a billion dollars in order to reach their fabled decima. Coaches came and left but none could deliver that elusive tenth title that Madrid and their fans wanted the most. Sure, they have lifted the La Liga title now and then, but not the cup with the big ears. Enter Ancelotti.
After a season which saw the team fractured and broken by none other than Jose Mourinho, the reins of the team was handed over to the calm and composed Ancelotti. As a player and as a coach, Carlito has seen it all and done it all. So, he was no stranger to handling players whose egos defined their paychecks. In his own way, he went about restructuring the team. Soon the fractious nature under Mourinho was replaced with one of quiet confidence. Ancelotti faced a lot of hurdles on the way, but at the end, he delivered the Champions League to the club that wanted it the most. After a season laden with success, question remains as to where they will go next.
