James Rodriguez scored what might be considered the best goal of this World Cup final as they knocked out a Suarez-less Uruguay out of the competition.
As tensions reached unimaginable levelsAi??at the Estadio Mineirao for the host nation and South American neighbors Chile, two other nations waited nervously in Rio for a clash that would decide who would face the host nation in the next round.
Both Colombia and Uruguay had lost a star each in Falcao, who missed the whole campaign due to injury, and Suarez due to his disappointing food habits. However Colombia, entering the stadium as favorites of the two, lined up in a conventional 4-4-2 with Jackson Martinez and Gutierrez leading the attack. Uruguay similarly replaced Suarez with legendary Diego Forlan alongside Edinson Cavani in a 4-4-2 as well. However neither of the forwards found the back of the net, and the person who stole the spotlight was 22 year old Monaco midfielder James Rodriguez.
Colombia looked threatening right from the word go, with winger Juan Cuadrado providing the much needed width as he used his pace and trickery to penetrate Uruguayai??i??s defence. On the other side, Edinson Cavani who is a striker, seemed to be the deepest playing midfielder as he paced up and down covering the whole pitch trying to carry his nation forward. However, the lack of an agile strike partner and Forlanai??i??s age caused Cavaniai??i??s lofted balls and accurate passes to wasteful possession as there would be no credible buildup to an attack. He did however force a few saves from the the Colombian stronghold Ospina.
The 28thAi??minute produced a moment of magic that saw many Uruguayan hearts broken. A lofted ball for star James Rodriguez (he had his back to the goal) who in a composed state looked over his shoulder to find Muslera in a position to favor him. He then proceeded to chest the ball, then turn and eventually unleashed a ruthless left foot volley which hit the cross bar and then the back of the net from 25 yards out. Touted the best goal of this world cup as yet, Rodriguez received much appreciation from team mates fans and football legends alike- Carlos Valderrama stating Colombia had found the new him.
Colombia began the second half with the upper hand which was then extended with a second goal by Rodriguez again. But much credit here is to be given to Juan Cuadrado who gathered his 4th assist of the tournament, higher than anyone else in this campaign. He, with great difficulty, peeled past the defence and cushioned a header to the six yard box which was neatly tucked into the goal by their number 10 Rodriguez to put a knife into the head of Uruguay.
The introduction of striker Stutani, Hernandez and Gaston Ramirez brought a change in tactics but made no difference to the results. Cavaniai??i??s constant efforts at goal went in vain. Colombia made a tactical change of their own removing their star towards the end and giving their Dortmund striker Adrian Ramos a run at Uruguay.
Uruguay and Colombia both share a similar style of playing, they tend to sit back and allow the opponent to come deep into their defense and then hit them on counter attack. This tactic proved fatal for Uruguay as their deep lying style eventually egged the Colombian side to attack. Once Colombia took the lead only then did Uruguay wake up and attempt to equalize. It is unfair to say that Uruguay’s loss is mainly attributable to the lack of Suarez in the side, one of the main drawbacks to this particular side was the lack of an game changing play maker. Christian Rodriguez wasnt half as impressive as his Colombian name sake and the center midfield duo of Gonzalez and Arevalo were more defensive in their approach and left everything else in the attack department to Cavani. Although fans enjoyed viewing the heavy work rate Cavani was putting in to the game. There seemed to be no complimentary force working along side him to ensure these moves were fruitful.
Colombia’s main strength lay in the Martinez and Rodriguez combination. Although lined up in a 4-4-2 formation, Martinez was often seen working down the left flank using his pace to tease the Uruguayan Defenders. This allowed Gutierrez to play a lone striker role and knock all the lofted balls played to him back to his midfield, more importantly James Rodriguez. Juan Cuadrado too with a spring in his step resembling that of Ronaldhino provided a creative outlet from the right. Effectively this converted their formation to a 4-5-1 which allowed them to crowd the midfield and block of any form of attack that was brewing up in the Uruguayan half.
With the final whistle a new star was christened in the Colombian history books as he overtook Messi, Muller and the lot to become top scorer of the tournament. Colombia now faces hosts Brazil who put up an unconvincing performance against Chile. If Colombia carry out such a performance in their future matches they will surely be World Cup contenders and might go on to even win the tournament for the first time in their nationai??i??s history.
